This might seem a little trivial for you guys, but I'd really appreciate the help since I've never owned my own car before and don't know much about them as of yet. Here's what's going on: I was finding out about an '89 VW Cabriolet being sold locally. When I presented the idea to my dad, he told me that he'd rather I get a Japanese-made car and also one that has parts more readily available. What are everyones' opinions on this, and also possibly some suggestions? I'm buying it myself, so keep in mind that my budget is like $2,500 about; $3,000 max. Thanks.

I can't comment on the car, but there are a few things that I can comment on.

It's an '89. It's 18 years old. Your dad is right... finding parts for that car when it starts to break down is going to be difficult and more importantly: expensive.

How many miles does it have on it? That's also a big factor. If the car has say 10,000 miles, that could be a good thing, and a bad thing. That means that is probably hasnt been driven much in 18 years. But if the car has 500,000+ miles on it, it might not be the greatest of ideas to look into purchasing it.

Also make sure to get a carfax or similar report on it. At least find out what the cars been through (if anything).
