i have a 2000 G20 and I was wondering if I change my tranny to manual....would it be bad by doing this?? What should I watch out after doing this.......And do all the tranny shop use the exact same parts from infiniti to install the manual for my G20....or do they fabricate things and make it into a manual conversion......I don't really know alot so dats why im askin......Late...THanks

Hey I am the one that posted about that and I actually did it with a P10...should be doable on your P11 tho'.

Ask away I'll point you in the rigght direction.

personally, i don't think its worth it to convert auto to manual on the p11. if you think of it, you pay more for auto than manual when you buy a car. so why pay even more to convert auto tranny down to manual? besides, I wouldn't trust anyone to do the conversion unless it was infiniti themselves which would probably back you up with a warranty.

just my 2 cents :)

Chances are the manual wan't in stock when he bought his G.

As for Infiniti warrantying it: They will not, when I told them I was doing this to my G they insisited it would not run or even start for that matter.

Well 3 months later it's running strong with its NX2000 tranny and I'm lovin it. The SR20 is night and day from auto to manual.

yah, the AT on our P11's are kinda tuned to perform in the 'luxury mode' only, so it is kind of a boggin' setup when you wanna go fast.

take it for instance today, some looser in a Sunfire wanted to race me, so I did to entertain myself on the way home. I dusted him by about 2 car lengths off the line...I let him pass me so that I'll pass him again. here comes an intersection with a blue light on the right turn lane, he takes it pretty fast on this piece of sh't tires, I took it while holding the gear in 2nd and timing myself so that it would wot to automatically down shift to 1st about 3/4th of the way out of the turn. I gun it and ... waiting for it to shift.. waiting for it to shift.. damn, shift god dammit!... I put the gear into 1st, but doesnt shift because the speed by dat time was too close to redline for 1st... so the sunfire dusted my ass in broad daylight. now dat sucks!!! if I had a manual I couldve slammed it into first as I was making the turn and dusted his ass with no effort.

so, there IS a HUGE difference between having a AT and MT. the P11 ATs dont perform nearly as responsive as a standard nissan sedan AT...it shifts silky smooth, but the reaction time is VERY slow.

so, if you plan to drive fast with this car, you need a MT. for me, its only a commuter so I'll take it as it comes...but if i find someplace who can swap it into a MT under $2500, Ill do it. I know some places out here in chicagoland can do 6sp sequential gear boxes, so they can probably do the 5MT conversion too.

Do you hae parts one and two all in one place. I need new transmission and I am getting such a run around with my automatic I may just go manual ( P10 )....

Do not attempt this. I am putting in a new auto in my 91 and just puting in a replacement is a pain. I thought about doing a conversion but I then found out what it entails, new wiring harness, cross members, pedal set, etc, etc. It is not worth it. You would be better off buying a used G20 for a couple grand and using that as a tuner car. Thats what I'm doing:)

Here's the thing, Im also wantin to convert to a 5spd. I got a 91 G2o. Its almost paid off and I dont want to start a new payment on a new car just for a 5speed. Plus, I wouldn't be able to get jack for my car until I get all the dents out (Bro hit it w/ K5 Blazer) I would like to keep it, convert to 5speed and SR20DET it. How much would I be looking to spend if I just got the SR20DET motor and 5speed installed at the same time? (Say I have motor already)

For a DET you would be looking to around $2000, just the engine wiring harness and ecu. A manuel you would be looking at another $200-$300. The wiring harness from a DET wouldn't be any good because it's from a different car, so you would need a different one. If the engine doesn't come with a flywheel than you would have to buy a flywheel, because an auto doesn't have a flywheel so your looking at another $200-$400, than you would need a clutch to handle the power. The list goes on and on, and so does the list. To do a complete drivetrain change over you would be looking to spend well over $5000.

Thats a crock converting does not require a harness, cross members etc..,

You just need the axles (if the tranny is VLSD and your G20 isn't)
tranny, pedals, complete clutch kit.

That should be it if I remember correctly...I know becuse I have done it twice now.

Just dispelling myths. Converting isn't all that hard.

If you are swapping out a DET for a normal DE you do need a witing harness. I swaped my automatic out last weekend and the middle mount between the engine and the transmission is different than a manuel transmission, I just called it by the wrong name, it isn't a cross member. My point is that it isn't an easy conversion.

Hmmm.. well I also had to fit the mount elsewhere but other than that it was easy.

Yes I know you do need an ECU & harness if you go DET...but not if you just convert with your DE from auto to manual.

Well since my car is messed up, i wont be needing the 5speed swap, i am going to look for a new G20 manual. So how much is it going to drop in the price of a DET since its already a manual?

Well out here the engine with harness and ECU is about 1500$

Unlocking the engine is 200$

Depends on who's installing so keep around 2k ready for the swap.

If you are going to do the swap yourself plan on spending around $3000 just to be safe.

Hmmm..not likely....maybe 2500$

Unlocking?? whats that all about??

Also, I read some where that w/ INJECTORS, NEW TURBO, MAS... it would be able to take more boost. It runs what PSI stock?? After I got stuff listed above(maby more stuff needed) what could I safly turn it up to??
Wow, im startin to get excited about gettin my motor swap!!

I found a GTi-R DET for $2000, which is what I will be installing, I plan on budgeting around $3000 for the install.
