Can anyone tell me where the main computer for a 1998 Kia Sportage 4x4 is located?

Sportage [AL] > 1998 > Engine > 2.0 DOHC
ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)
Removal
1. Take out two screws and remove lower right side trim panel below the instrument panel, on the passenger side of the vehicle.
2. Pull back carpet to expose the ECM.
3. Remove four nuts retaining the ECM to the floorboard mounting bolts.
4. Remove the ECM from the mounting bolts.
5. Disconnect the ECM connector.

I suggest you explain your problem...ecm is rarely at fault.

This is my father's vehicle. He said that the starter will act like it is going to start, but it does nothing. I told him that I didn't think it was the computer, but he is hard headed.

Definitely not the computer as a first suspect....:nono:
IF the starter cranks and the engine fails to fire up,
question 1: is the CHeck Engine Light (CEL) on?
DId the problem aggravate with time or came on a sudden?
What is the mileage?
Any other symptoms

HArd starting is common after a while and is solved sometimes by cleaning the Idle AIr Valve with gaz or carb solvent. 2nd suspect is the Crank Position Sensor, easy to change.

ANyway, better to have more details and investigate in an orderly manner: this little beast has its ways:evillol: ....and a lot are common stuff with the forum members here:grinyes: ...so get a little help from friends.

I think it has about 115,000 miles but I am not sure. He just bought it form another person, so I don't know how long the problem has persisted. I do know that the vehicle has been sitting since at least October of last year. In any case, I will tell him. I tought it may also be the cellinoid. My mom had a 1974 ford grand torino that did the same thing, and it turned out to be the starter cellinoid.

...the starter will act like it is going to start, but it does nothing...
I understand for sure the engine does not FIRE UP (run on its own power).
NOw:
Does the starter rotate or do you just have "click click" (dead battery or corroded connectors)?
Does engine rotate with starter?

The starter rotates and I think the engine does too.
