speedometer drive gear

have a 1990 cav with a 2.2 engine, automatic tranny. I want to remove the speedometer drive gear to see if it may have a broken tooth. I have the cable unscrewed and disconnected but not sure if round metal clip holding the gear in place just pries off, or if there is some trick to getting it out of the transmission.
