turn it over a few times and then cheack a plug, see if it's wet from fuel.
are you hearing the fuel pump? also if you have a spare plug hanging around pull a wire and put the spare plug in it get someone to turn the car over and watch for a spark, if no spare plug you can use a bolts and holding the boot of the wire not the bolts have someone turn it over and hold it near the block somewhere and se if you can se a spark.
if no spark check your grounds.

check all the connections, make sure there's no corrosion, clean everything with rough sandpaper.
it's probably a bad ground somewhere

Ireland Eh? I'm from Essex in England but living in Canada so when i said ground i should have said earth.
It's not liely to cut spark with no fuel.
tbi on an 89? I thought that stopped in 88 and the 89 should be 'tuned port injection'? I could be wrong that may just be 5.7.
this is the TBI

not sure if you would be able to see the injector nozzle on that, but if you can, you can remove the air cleaner and turn it over and see if it's spraying.
the new disi cap isn't 180* out by any chance is it?

i'm just a bit of a car bore. i hope you are able to work it out soon. dioes still sound like some sort of ignition issue. have you tried cleaning the connections, could be one of the main earths at the starter or the connections at the coil and from there. don't know what else to suggest
