Cruise control

I have a 2004 mountineer and the cruise only works when it wants to?
Dont know if it's electric or vacuum" All help appreciated. Thanks Art.

Make sure the brake lights work properly. When the cruise doesn't work, does the indicator still light on the dash? Does it just not turn on, or does it sometimes shut off after it's been set and working?

2000 mountaineer here!! No cruise control and I am leaving Monday for a long drive from Tulsa to WA state and back with grandbabies!! where is the cruise control light? I guess I need to dig out the manuel... it is so far away (in the glove box..lol) but it does not light or I would know where it is!! So do i need to have someone look at my brakes lights? What do brake lights have to do with the cruise control? What is a clockspring? My horn also is not working. I swear the horn worked when I bought the car a month ago????:banghead:

There is a switch on the brake pedal that will disengage the cruise control (or prevent it from turning on if it is shorted high) when the brake pedal is depressed. Also, the horn button will short the cruise circuit to ground and should disable the cruise if the horn is pressed.

The cruise light is a green indicator in the upper right of the instrument cluster (if I recall correctly) that reads, "Speed Control."

All of the button inputs travel from the switches to the cruise module via clocksprings. If you verify that the switch inputs are not making it to the cruise module, check the yellow/light green wire at the horn relay. The horn relay is located in the battery junction box. If that wire does not go to ground potential when the horn button is pressed, there is a pretty good chance that the "air bag sliding contact" (aka: clockspring" is your problem.

Sorry, just skimming so maybe this is a non needed reply. Ford has a recall on the cruise control for the 2000 Mountaineer (can catch on fire or something like that). I took mine in and they replaced what was one wire with this massive monster of electrical tape and blue warning labels, and my cruise control didn't work and they never did tell me at the dealer what they did wrong after they fixed it. So maybe that had something to do with it.
