breaking into your own trunk

On my firebird (1986) theres something broken off in the trunk key hole, idk if its the key or something else, I tired sticking a screwdrive in it to turn it, but no luck.

is there a way to open the trunk without the key? I have a taillight I need to replace.

I take it you don't have a power trunk release button. Can you get into the trunk from the back seat of the car? Maybe you can get a new perspective on the lock from inside the truck.

Well first of all you are going to need to determine if it is infact a peice of a key or some foreign object. It might not be possible to tell but if you can get a good look up by the pins that might shed some light.

If it is a key there are a couple things you can try. First of all since it is a key it is probably already pushing in most if not all of the pins. Try sticking a very fine flat head screwdriver into the bottom and turning. If that doesn't work try using a Dental Pick to push in any remaining pins and turn the screwdriver again. There is no fine science to this its kind of trial and error.

The best thing to do would be to remove the broken key/foreign object. There are a couple ways to do this. You can try to grab it with needle nose pliers but you probably won't be able to get a hold of it. You can try using dental picks to hook a hill (if it is a key) and pull it out. Another method that is kind of dangerous is to take a small stick (like a toothpick, but metal would be better). Put a very tiny dab of glue on the stick and put the stick into the lock and stick it to the broken key. Wait for the glue to dry and pull the brokenkey or foreign object out of the lock.

Once it is out you should be able to use your door key to open the trunk. If the cylinders have been replaced on your doors, and the key doesn't work you can go to the dealership and have them cut you a door key from the VIN. I seriously doubt the trunk cylinder has been changed.

If you are like me you might want to pick up a lock pick set, they are dead useful and hours of fun.

climb in the back seat and look into the very back of the car. You should see a small rectangular light built into the plastic that runs across the back of the car vertical. Pull the light and its socket and you will see the back side of the lock. Stick a screwdriver into the slot and turn it. TA-DA its open.

I just got done changing the door locks, and ignition cylinder, the guy the bought the car from is questionable, and only gave me a copy of the originals, so I changed them. im gonna do the trunk soon. eBay has a lot of good stuff :iceslolan

My fat ass would never fit in the back seat to get to the lock. LOL.

I had to climb through my hatch once to kick open my door in the winter...the weatherstripping froze lol.
