Odometer failure

I just bought a 01 Cherokee that had 83,000 miles on it. Somehow the OD went out, so the dealer found a used one from a junkyard and replaced the failed dash with the new old one. The new old one registered 101,000 miles on it.

The paperwork was sent to the Sec of State (Mich) indicating the odemeter discrepancy.

My question is this: I was told a dealer can re-set the new old od to the correct mileage (83,000). My dealer (non-jeep) says he can't reset the od.

Anyone know whether the od can be reset to read the correct mileage? Can a Jeep dealer do it? :shakehead
