Hi everybody
I have a 2001 Grand Am 3.4 L GT and recently the check engine light came on. I got it checked out and all I got was auxiliary emission control system problems. What exactly is that and has anyone any ideea what might be wrong? The engine works like before except that it burns a lot of gas. About 2 years ago I replaced the EGR valve but now I do not think that is the problem, I tried to unplug that see if I would get the same result on the code reader, but I got different readings.
Thanks

From personal experience, it could just be an eletrical short. My check engine light is ALWAYS on. They told me it couldn't be fixed, so who am I to argue. My car is fine, and like you said, your's is running the same, so.. you never know. The only down side to having a short on a light like that is.. how do I know when to check my engine? haha.
good luck.
good luck.

alincosma,
post the exact code(s)!
Then we'll see what we can come up with.
The light just doesnt "come on" for no reason, not even in your older GAs.
If its on, thier is something not right, and with gas at all time highs,
who wants to waste it ?!
Not me :grinno:

Hi
I finally got the code, is P1404. I was told that is again the EGR valve , problem is open all the time.
Could anybody confirm that?
Thanks again

Yipe it's EGR valve pintal closed.
Its either bad or the EGR and pipe are clogged.

Hi again
I replaced the EGR valve waited a week for the check engine light to go off, it didn't so I asked to be erased. They erased it but it came back on. So I guess it isn't the EGR valve, or could there be something related to it? I mean why would the old one go bad after 2 years. I'm really confused.
