How can I check to know whether my steering/gear box is working properly?

About the only issue is gear play due to wear and you can tighten it on top with the screw after loosening the lock nut but it will not recenter (will bind) if over tightened. Most play is in the linkage and idle arm, ball joints, and worn hubs. Assumes PS pump works.

Thanks. I'll try tightning up the gear box.

So far, I've replace the idler arm and balljoints and sway bar end bushings.

I don't hear any humming or roaring from the front hubs. Could they still be worn without any signs ? I don't want to just throw a part at it ...

My tie rods seem firm and tight.

My control arm bushings are old, but I keep them lubed with silicone spray. They don't clunk much ...

Any other ideas? Pitman arm seems firm.
