Royal Purple

I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 V6, it has 116,600k miles on it. I have been using regular high milage oil for a long time now, no sythetics. Would it be a bad idea to put 10w30 Royal Purple Sythetic Oil in there, the next time i change my oil?

Did you mean valve cover gaskets?

You can change to synthetic oil at any time although you may develop some gasket leaks. The valve cover gaskets are the most vulnerable to leaking but aren't that hard to change. The superior lubrication properties of the synthetic oil will help your engine last longer.

I did this to one of my cars and it messed up my turbo and all of my gaskets. I will never make that mistake ever agine.

I'm still not convinced of the real world advantages of synthetic oils other than in high performance/ hard-worked vehicles.

I've owned many cars and put well over 200k miles on most of them, without ever having an oil related failure. I personally feel synthetics are a waste of money for the average car. The change interval is still the same, and switch can cause issues that weren't present before. What's the point?

This is one of the great debates of all times. To use synthetic or not to use synthetic. Personally, I like the synthetics as they don't break down like the Dyno stuff although frequent oil changes can prevent this from happening. I have not yet had an engine failure using either type as the maintenance is up to date on my vehicles and over the years I have used a lot of oil.

One experience that actually sold me on synthetic oil was in my college days, I took an engine theory class in which we got to disassemble and rebuild an engine. The engine I worked on was a Fiat 4 cyl. that had been used for road racing. The engine was rebuilt once and after an additional 100K miles there was absolutely no wear in the engine. The only oil used in the engine was synthetic. (As shown by measuring everything and comparing to previous measurements.) I have been a fan of synthetics ever since.

Of course that is just one person's experience so I guess the great debate will continue for years to come.

I personally use Mobil1 and I like it. I can't say that I Feel a difference, but I do have peace of mind that it can withstand the ridiculous AZ heat and not breakdown!

GTPDAD...Well my dad(60yr old) had a get and a few other nice cars as well and back in the 50s and 60s they would use a whole can of stp addative, now if you decide to use it, you would only use a glob of it. I guess some cars run better on reguler oil, and some dont. I think in general....Use what your car is supposed to have. But thats just my 2 cents.

For whats it worth. I switched my car over the Mobil1 at 15k miles. I’ve had no leaks, or any other oil related problems ever. 8) And I change my oil every 4 or 5 thousand miles. I’m up to 43k miles now.

I like sythetics, the cost is high. From what I've seen it does help keep the wear & tear down to a minimum.

IMO if you are a gear head, you might go the extra to help preserve/prolong the life of your engine or trans.

My GA SE has all synth. The oil, trans fluid, power steering, and of coarse the Dex(which could be considerd a synth). It runs like a wrist watch, smooth & quiet :D
