I own a 1986 Olds Regency with the 3.8 V-6. The car was sitting over the winter, about 8 months. Anyway, the engine idles at about 1500-2000 RPM, all the time, hot or cold, don't matter. I unplugged the IAC valve and plugged it back in with no change in idle speed. There is no "check Engine" light on. I don't see any vacuum leaks. Could the IAC valve be bad? Thank you for yuor help.:banghead:

Welcome to AF. Yes, take it out clean the carbon off, do the same to the throttle body.

I put a new IAC valve in and cleaned the throttle body, still idles way high. I sprayed carb cleaner around the intake, etc., checked all the vacuum lines, did'nt find anything. I also turned the idle screw out, which still did not help. Anything else that would cause this?

Yes a bad tps sensor, with a scanner you should have about .50 volts at idle, base idle screw back where it belongs.
