Ok so I have a 1993 ford ranger with a 2.3 I4 and when my truck is on my compressor engauges and disengauges unnecessarily and when i dont need it it just bogs my engine, so i pulled the relay. I did that since it turns on when its not supposed to be on, the orange light is not on. what do i have to do to keep it off?

Your compressor will come on some when you have your heat set in the defrost mode, or the defrost floor mode. Could this be why it coming on in your truck. It comes on to keep the windows from fogging up

As a follow up to Toodler62, run your A/C thru it phases and see what it does. Does your A/C come on when you have the A/C switch off? Try shifting the lever thru the various positions such as upper cab, lower cab, defrost, max, etc. and see what it does.

so why would the compressor come on with the defroster that doesn't make sense?

Because much like dehumidifacation, to defrost you need to lower the temperature and thus you need the A/C on.

The compressor takes a significant amount of horse power to run it. The smaller the engine the more you'll usually notice it

In fact in most applications, the A/C is automatically disconnected during abrupt acceleration or during hard pull. The sound you hear from the A/C is its clutch cycling to maintain temperature. In many other cars, they use the "by-pass" method to control the reefer cycle so its much quieter.

I had that happening on my '92 Ranger XLT and it was just low on freon. I filled it up with a can that has a regulator on it I bought at AutoZone. I fixed the problem for about $8.00.
