Overheating Problem?

My '99 Cavalier shuts off when it's really hot outside and then my engine light comes on.
It runs perfectly in the Winter months.
Is it really an overheating problem because the temperature gauge needle doesn't go in the red zone.
Any Cavalier owners have had this problem?
