hi guys , i have a quick question about my tranny for some of you guys thats already had this problem. i know my sunshell is gone as i have no reverse. but also i have no 2nd or OD . all i have is 1st and Drive . my question is do you think its just the sunshell and or sun gear , or something else too . my local guy said most likely bands or something else because usually sunshell is "ONLY" no reverse...... has anyone else experienced other gears gone besides reverse with the sunshell ?? thanks in advance folks.

clean as a whistle ., when it first actually happened i had a big crunch and grind noise , then i had no reverse or 2nd or OD. but drive and works perfect in 1st then jumps into drive after the speed gets high enough. and no noises or nothing . i know it has to come out and most likely the sunshell is gone , im hoping no planets or anything major is gone as well..

A broken sunshell means no 2nd, 4th or Reverse. 2nd and 4th both require the sunshell to be stopped (this is done by applying the 2-4 Band) and since the sunshell is broken, it can not be stopped (and 2nd and 4th do not work).
You really should not be driving it with a broken sunshell.

thanks for the replys, i havent been driving it other than a few feet down the road when it happened to determine what gears i had. my main concern was when this guy told me that the sunshell only controlled the reverse gear. so i was thinking that maybe i had other problems. again thanks for the quick replys.

As Yukon said the sun gear is stripped.
But if it has a lot of mileage on it it would be a good time to go all of the way threw or replace the transmission when it is out.
But either way make sure they put the upgraded sun shell gears in it.
And use a new converter and be sure to flush the transmission oil coolers.
The GM factory rebuilt is the no one way to go.
3 year or 50k warranty parts and labor.
Good Luck
