95 Voyager fuel pump question

95 Voyager, 170,000 miles 3.3 engine 4 speed auto trans.

Vechile will not start after driving from point a to b this morniing. I have checked to make sure it has spark at coil pack and at a spark plug. Removed and replace fuel filter, when i had the fuel filter off we cranked the engine but DID NOT have any fuel at inlet end of fuel filter. I checked all fuses and relay for fuel pump and seem to be good. Taking the connector apart before going to top of gas tank, I get a very dim light on my test light (making sure I have good ground I hooked booster cables to negative battery post with cable on battery) on 1 terminal and nothing on the others. Is there anything I am over looking ??? I want to be sure it is the fuel pump before I remove tank to install new one. (I have not checked error codes yet)

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT A BAD GROUND BATTERY CABLE MAY CAUSE THE FUEL PUMP NOT WORK?????

Thanks for any and all advice,

LS

Do you hear the fuel pump click on and run when you turn the key on? Did you try the "beat the gas tank with a rubber mallet" trick?

No I did not try the rubber mallet trick yet (I need to buy a malllet first) and no it doesn't seem to click on. These are my next steps. thanks for suggestions.

A hunk of 2x4 will also work in a pinch. You should be able to hear the pump click on when you try to start. Remove the wire from the distributor or coil pack so it won't start and try the key. It's easy to make a new ground and rule that out as the problem.

Well I did the rubber mallet test on the gas tank, the vehicle started immediately so I guess it's time to install new fuel pump. Any suggestions for draining the gas tank?? (Ialso cleaned battery cables and bat posts also the ground wire to the engine head.)

thanks for advice jsinton

No easy way to drop the tank. Probably best to siphon the gas out first. Be careful after you finally disconnect the filler tube and drip the tank that you don't rip out the wires from the pump. You are supposed to clean the tank when you replace the pump, as dropping the tank tends to dislodge the gunk in the tank and clog the screen around the bottom of the pump. It's not an easy or clean thing to do.

Project finally conpleted: Installed new fuel pump, would only run at idle. Tested system and had only 22 PSI. Removed new pump and warrantied it, installed another new pump and vehicle operated correctly. (50 PSI)

Thanks for all advice,

Just out of curiosity, where did you get your new fuel pump(s)?

A Bosch (lifetime warranty) pump from Checker Auto Parts. (I believe any brand can have a faulty part.)
