I beat a 240sx about a week ago. My car is all stock. But I was racing some kid who doesn't know how to race. He did know how to rev the engine though. :D

I would go with a 300zx before getting a 240sx.

Okay, there are really two engines for the 240SX, in all it's variations. There is the KA24 family, and the SR20 family. The most common in north america are the KA24DE engines, which are 2.4 liter, naturally aspirated DOHC 4 cylinders. There is an aftermarket for these engines, including turbo kits. They can make as much as 500hp...

The other choice is the SR20, usually the SR20DET, DOHC Turbo engine... these engines have reportedly made 800hp, but I've never seen it. Figures of 600 hp are not unheard of, but 400hp modified engines are more common. Lot's of power potential for a 2800-3000 lb car...

The nicest ones, IMO are the 89-93(?) 240SX hatchbacks, the S13(RS13 Europe, 180SX Japan). A full turbo conversion on the KA24DE would be $3K-6K, depending on hardware choices, and whether or not you do it yourself.

A SR20DET swap is similarly $4K-$8K, depending on who you pay, and how stock you keep the engine(tweak tweak 350hp oops)...

ya i just started looking at a 300zx they are nice if i could just find a TT300zx in my price range:( i have seen them for around $8,000 thats not to bad but i only have $10,000 that i can spend. I have $20,000 but my parents wont let me spend any more than that so that would leave me with 2k to spend on mods at first. Is 8k a good price for a TT300zx

If you're finding a 90+ Z32 300ZX TT for $8K, I would suspect serious mechanical faults/very high miles. Everything to do with a Z32 is expensive. OTHO, you can get a really nice 240SX for $3K, put the engine of your choice in it for another $4K, and still have $3K to put into tires/suspension and a stereo :)

Thier were a few i think they were 95, 93 , and a 94 there were some more but they were cheaper and older

For those years, expect to pay somewhere in the price range of $12,000-$17,000 if the car has no problems.

I bet something is wrong with that one you are looking at for $8,000.

They're really nice cars, but very expensive in all ways... Your budget is really more suited to something like a 240SX, or a Porsche 944 turbo :)

You're right! The CA18DET was the engine for the 180SX, which was the S13 hatchback with the pop up headlights. This is why the SilEighty is called the Sil(silvia)Eighty(180SX).

I'm not sure about really high power outputs, but I'm sure 400hp can be achieved with the CA18... Sorry, I'm in North America, and we stopped getting the CA18 after the S12 200SX(didn't we? )

BTW Racer D12, the yellow one is a 240SX S13 hatchback(if it's US spec), and the blue one looks like an RX7 FD, or a modified S13...

ha you civic guys can laugh at our stock 240's all you want. but i went to a queens 240sx meeting and i saw Trantrum's S13 coupe. that car with 8 grand invested. including the car itself. can run mid 13's. basically its a S13 (240sx) with a S14 SR20DET (j spec motor) in it. the swap includes a front mounted incooler, boost controller etc. so bascially that car should be pushing around 280hp at hte crank. on a car that weights no more then 2700lbs. thats almost 1000 lbs less then a 300ZX TT. so for all you honda guys out there sayin that you beat a lowly S13 stock with your even slower civic EX's. i'm pretty sure you can even throw in the almighty H22a into your EF chassis civics and a S15 powered S13 will still take your precious litttle front wheel drive econo boxes. there is someone on this forum who has a S13 hatch with a S15 motor swaped into it, and with 18psi's of boost runnin on stock eternals. kept up with a dodge viper R/T 10. by the time they hit 120mph. it was only a car behind. and that was the 3rd time he ever drove it with 18psi's. if he had more practice at that setting i'm pretty sure that he would equal the viper. because after that race, the guy int he viper asked to drive that 240. and he was impressed with it for a 4 banger, and told guy with the 240 next time i'lls how you how to drive this car. lolz

To get a few of the terms right
a 180SX front with a silvia back is a onevia

the Sileighty is a Silvia nose on a 180back section

BTW yes we got the CA but it was a crap version
the CA18DET in the JDM and Euro S13s was sweet..the block was a little stronger than the SR20DET but it didnt get the love of the aftermarket like the SR..so not as much stuff for it.

the Stock SR can take like 400HP on stock bottom end and live..the CA can take a little more..

Cbass

I had no idea the CA was such a strong engine... my memories of the CA18DET were of the original S12 200SX turbos... man that was a big hood scoop :D

Actually, I don't know if that was a CA18DET, was it DOHC?

Anyways, 240SX are great cars, light weight, good power potential, good suspension.. there are cars that handle better, cars that go faster, cars with faster acceleration, but it's one of the rare cars that does all of these things very well.

this is kind of off topic but whats the max power out put for the mazda protage super or what ever its called the one with turbo

TatII

the mazda speed protege. thats goin to have 170hp stock.

TatII
10-20-2002, 10:19 PM
i also laugh when people ask if 240's have good power potential. our cars are probrably one of the most potent cars on the market. adn the SR20DET is one of the most overly engines in the world as well. the n/a version has 140hp. but the internals can handle up to 450hp. like what dave colman said from sportcompactcar. the SR is the most ridiciously overly built 140hp in the world.

RACER D12
10-21-2002, 07:06 PM
What is the MAX power you can get out of the speed protege:confused:

Cbass
10-21-2002, 07:37 PM
No one knows... your best bet for finding out would be finding someone who races a turbo protege, and asking them.

I'm not sure about the internals of the Mazdaspeed Protege, but it should probably take 300+ hp.
