Welcome to AF.

Why do you need a new supercharger? How many miles do you have? The problem with a turbo is the cost...expensive. You can modify your GTP with bolt-on mods to beat most Mustangs out there but probably not all. It all depends on how much money you want to spend.

i have 80k miles but im looking to put alot of money to build this car. im not sure if i should go with my stock 3800 and do work to it or buy a totally different engine and do work to it. im making this grand prix a 10 second car or less. hopefully less.

2002 grand prix gtp 3.8 super charged 88k miles.

Well, I am by far no expert, but I have asked the questions you have asked.

In a nutshell here is what I have been told, and what I am actually doing -I have a 2001 GTP and want to own mustangs also :)

1.) Open the intake, get a nice Cold Air Intake. K&N make good CAI's but they are pretty expensive. Make sure you shop around and read forums.
2.) Open the exhaust, at least remove the ubend and get a nice magnaflow cat. Doing a 3in downpipe with ubend delete and magnaflow cat is a good start to the exhaust.
3.) Get a performance PCM to replace your stock PCM. A performance PCM is tuned to tap into your car's unused potential.
4.) Here is the one of the more fun upgrades. Drop a size on your supercharger pulley. Dropping sizes on your charger pulley requires other mods too supplement it or you might damage your engine. Changing to a 'colder' plugs along with a 180 Thermostat is mostly required for this upgrade. The previously mentioned exhaust, intake and PCM upgrades are also considered 'support' mods in this respect. Changing the pulley will give you probably the highest HP gain outside of a specialized supercharger or an expensive turbo.

The aforementioned upgrades are considered 'bolt-on' because they are somewhat easy and dont require extensive modifications or time to implement. I recommend having someone do it for you if you do not know what your doing under the hood.

There are of course so many more mods you can do.
1.) Rockers
2.) Camshaft
3.) Headers and Catback
4.) Throttle body
5.) Getting a turbo...

Just keep in mind that the bigger more complicated upgrades often need support mods in order to be effective or to save your engine from damage.

In my opinion, you should be able to give most mustangs a hell of a ride if not beat them with the first 4 mods I mentioned. Dont talk yourself into something that is not easily attainable, in my opinion a 10second GTP would be difficult to build. I saw a guy with an insane turbo setup with a laundry list of mods and he was low 11's. The GTP is not really made to go much above 120, someone correct me if I am wrong, unless you can get out past 140-150 10sec would be difficult to hit.

I am going out on a limb here with this one, because it is debated from many angles, but I suggest running synthetic. Synthetic oil is superior to normal oil and would go well with increasing the performance on your GTP. Some people argue that moving to synthetic beyond 50k miles is useless, others say it only helps and does not hurt anything. You will have to make a judgement call there...

Like I said, I am not an expert, so if you require further advice or whatever, there are several experienced people here who can help you make your modding decisions.

Good luck modding.

Why is that? In the OP's case since he plans on rebuilding the engine any debate between using dino and syn oil would be moot. Based on his plans he would be wise to use synthetic motor oil. I made the switch to Mobil 1 at around 45K miles in my GTP.

I made the switch to Mobil 1 at 72,000 miles, because I thought it would be a good idea and would not hurt anything. The reason I said I was going out on a limb as any other time I have argued the merits of synthetic over normal oil I always end up in an argument. I didnt want to push it because of that :)

The fastest GP time I have seen was a 9 second car from ZZP, and it was insanely modded. We're talkin thousands of dollars in just mods, not to mention man hours! A 10 second car, like OJ said, would be very difficult and expensive.

If you have that kinda time and money, the only way I see you getting those times is with some crazy turbo, prolly twin turbo, setup. See what I mean by $$$!!! The supporting mods for that would be incredibly high too! Probably everything except for the block would have to be upgraded to cope with the insane HP. IMO it's not worth it.

I'm no expert either, but that's my :2cents:

what if i put the new GTX V8 motor from the new Grand prix's. do you think it would fit. because a V8 easily would tune easier than the 3800 and i could easily put a super charger on that instead. those stonk without super is 305 horse. need advice if V8 is worth it or not. i would hate to get rid of the gtp cuz i like the body style to much i hate all else and even the 2004 and above models there ugly.

- CAI
- U bend delete
- Res. delete
- High flow mufflers (DynoMAX, Magnaflow, etc.)
- 180* T-stat
- 1* colder plugs
- S1 or S2 / LS1 / N* TB
- PCM (INTENSE or ZZP)
- Tuner

In that order...

Then you can go onto:

- Smaller pulley
- Rockers/pushrods
- Cam
- Gen 3 / Gen 5 / MP112 SC

And make sure if you go through with all of these, you upgrade the tranny and diff. Give INTENSE a call, ask for Tim or Scott, tell em I sent ya! :grinyes:
