Any comments about the reliability of Volvos?

I was looking at Volvo's recently, as car for the household (grocery carrier, long distance car, etc). I've noticed that these car's depreciate worse than Mitsubishis (which I find incredible, since Mitsubishis lost their value fast enough, but these Volvos take the cake), hence relatively late models can be had for a great price.
My question: does anyone on here have any experience with Volvos? Are there any stereotypical problems that plague these cars? I am looking at years from 1996-2003, roughly. I realize that Volvo's liveup consists of mostly 5-cyl oddball turbocharged or twin-turbocharged vehicles, so boost = faster engine wear, but any insight would be appreciated.

My shop always has Volvos in there with crack pistons. It never fails that I go in there and they're ripping the head off to replace some pistons.

Judgeing from your Sig, you have quite a bit of vehicles already.. You want to add another?? What do you do for work if you don't mind me asking??

Only thing I know about Volvos are that they have windsheild wipers on the headlights :grinno:

My mom used to have a Volvo. I think it was a 2000 850.....It was a 5 cylinder turbo and made decent power. Nothing earth shattering, but it had some get up and go. Anyway, she had it for about 4 years and sold it with somewhere around 85,000 on the clock. She never had any problems with the car, other than routine maintence.

I'm a gigolo, booked all season by MILFs. Please call 1-800-MILFS-ONLY for the next available appt. :icon16:
The eclipse is sold, so I only have 2 cars now....sniff sniff. Seriously though, the car isnt for me, parents are getting rid of the Civic, and they need something a little bigger and safer (not to mention a tad faster...those 1.6 liters of pure fury werent exactly cuttin it).

If you are looking for a good car for your parents and something not outrageously priced I would look into a volvo, they have a large amount of luxuries without a huge price. Alot of the guys I know out here that are into cars, swear by volvos as the best all around DD, mostly because they beat the shit out of them and they keep going.

Will ma' man, what's up? How'd your trip go?
That's exactly what I've heard from a few friends regarding those cars, and +1 on the luxuries: their interiors are really nice and comfy. Just testing the waters for now, and so far, people only have good things to say about them.

Wow he sold it a while back. Yeah it was a good car.
But about your thread. Volvos are reliable cars. My 2 favorite cars for cheap is the Volvo and Saab. Both turbocharged and very reliable. I love em.
