You need a new instrument cluster. The immobilizer portion of it has failed.

Question? is this something that will put me on the side of the road? i tryed starting it like 5 times ran fine...the code came back each time i cleared it and restarted it...Is this a DIY?? i am a ASE master.. not on VW....GM,Ford,Jeep.
Any guess on the cost?
Thank you for an answer to what was wrong! This is a great Forum!

First I'd fit a new battery to the remote, if it doesn't work get the remote reprogrammed to the car. A damaged remote can still open the doors but fail to get past the immobiliser. A new instrument cluster will cost an arm and aleg so That would have to be a last resort I'd reckon. I think VW have to reprogram the remote....you don't have a spare?
Good Luck.
Good Luck.

While lucks on your side it might be a good idea to get a second key head and remote programmed because it "probably" will happen again and it might be at 3AM in the backblocks! They are on Ebay I've heard but think only VW can then program them. Good Luck.

You need the key programmed since its a 2001 at the dealer. It will cost about 160.00 for the key at the dealer and 50-100 to program it.
