2000 pontiac grand prix headlights don't work

My low beam headlights only work in the daytime when the sensor runs the low voltage headlights. If I try to turn them on with the light switch they turn off, but everyhing else (courtesy lights, dashboard lights) run fine. At night, when the light sensor turns the full light system on, all lights work, including the high beams, except the low beam head lights. I know the lights are not burnt because theyr'e on in the daytime, and when the light switch is in the off position. Has anybody had this problem? Is it a relay, is it the manual switch?. Please help. Thank you

Welcome to AF.

It looks like the DRL portion is working fine because the low beams come but should at a reduced brightness. Your problem is common. It looks like the low beam contacts in the multifunction switch (stalk) are bad. There is no relay in that circuit before the low or high beams.

Thank you for your reply and info. I will inspect and test the switch; I believe the multifuntcion switch you reffered to is the one inside the vehicle used to turn the lights on, am I correct?.
Once again, thank you.

You're welcome.

The MFS is the stalk on the steering column aka the turn signal lever. About a one hour DIY job to replace but it is expensive whether aftermarket or new from a GM dealer.

i am having this same problem with my 2000 pontaic grand prix gtp with the surpercharger. Where is this switch you are referring to located? Is it the switch that controls the headlights and parking lights? Also my brights, when i pull the lever to turn them on, they do not stay on when i release this lever. Do you know anything about this? Please reply to john.lyons4@us.army.mil thank you

Welcome to AF.

The multifunction switch (MFS) is the stalk with the turn signals, cruise, wipers, windshield washer, and hazard switch, etc. See pic below. This one was replaced for high beams not staying on when lever pulled. You should hear a click. If not the switch is bad.

Hello
In keeping with this theme, I have a 97 GTP with the same problem, will try this fix..Thank You. Maybe you could tell me what the Day Time Running Light Module does ??? I changed it out, located beside the fuse block behind the glove box ( grey box 5''by3'' or so with circuit board inside) It was corroded, moisture inside. Funny thing though, with this module out, it made no difference with anything, DRL's still worked, etc...
Any Clue ??
Thanks. Stefanb97

Many thanks to BNAYLOR for your post, it was my multifunction switch, I had a burnt out wire, broken off at the top block, unfortunatly you can't replace the wire as it is hard wired into it...Changed out complete assembly and now I can see at night again lol....Still don't know what the mitchell diagram calls the Daytime Running Light module does though, even when taken out, DRL's still work, and all other functions seem normal.
Again Thank You.. Stefanb97
