Front End Clunk

My wifes car, a 1991 Cavalier, makes a clunking noise in the front end. It usually happens when we hit a bump and occasionally while turning, but not every time. I grabbed ahold of the tie rods and wiggled them and they have a bit of play up and down. Is this normal, or could this be the cause of the clunk?

Thanks
Terry

Likely the front struts and or strut mounts looking at the age of it . However tie rods should not be loose either . Do you notice any steering wheel shake/vibration when driving down the highway? How are the tires any unusal wear on them . Does it run straight down the highway. Cv joints will clunk when you are turning a corner as well, as in turning in a parking lot /street corner etc

I was thinking struts myself, but bouncing the front end up and down by hand doesn't cause the noise. After looking at it a little closer, it's not just the tie rods, but the whole steering assembly that seems to move. I haven't notice any shaking or vibration, nor does it seem to pull to one side. There's a little wear on the inside of the drivers side tire.

You can feel the clunk on the floorboard, especially on the passenger side.

Thanks for your help.

Terry

Edit:

I uploaded a video to youtube.

About 25 seconds in gives the best shot of what I'm trying to describe, and you can hear the noise it's making when I move it.
