Engine & Trans identification

I need to find the year of my engine since it had been swapped when I got the car. Are the numbers located the same place as older blocks? What's the best way to get to them?
On the transmission, what are the gear ratios? I have the ratios for a close ratio and a wide ratio but don't know which I have. Do the numbers cast into the trans case mean anything? It has 13-86-212-901-11 (may be an H).

Thanks,
Rob

here u go.

http://www.mortec.com/location.htm

click on V-8 casting numbers to identify your block.

I would suggest placing aluminum foil over the casting number and rubbing it so that you imprint the number in the foil.... or using a digital camera and flash to get the number.

sorry.... dont know about ID'ing tranmissions. which tranny is it anyway? T56?

Thanks for the reply. I've been building older sbc's for years and the mortec site has always been helpful. I know very little about the newer engines and thought this might be an LT1 but I just found out LT1's don't have a traditional distributor. Is this correct? If so, I don't have an LT1.

Yes, the trans is a T-56. I've got a friend that used to build tranny's and he's looking up the numbers for me. Hoping someone here would also know just to be sure.

Thanks,
Rob
