Bare Aluminum Cobra 427 SC

I did this body for a primer article in an upcoming "how-to" issue of Scale Auto. I got the primer perfected and photographed, and was ready to roll with finishing it.

I was very indecisive about color. Mach I 2003/Eric and BRE 350Z/Wayne convinced me to paint it similarly to Eric's bare metal 427; but with a twist. They decided for me that I had to finish it with polished stripes

Actually it wasn't too difficult; I used Krylon dull aluminum which works great and it polishes out a bit by merely buffing it with a soft polishing rag. I masked the stripes off and polished away, and got a nice subtle color change and a bit of a polished appearance. Ultimately I'd like the stripes to be a bit brighter, but that might not happen. They're good now, and the body will get more detail and some meatballs and sponsor decals. Fun project :) Wheels/tires are from a parts-box Fujimi GT40 Mk II which are infinitely better rolling stock than what Monogram provides.

what kind of tape did you use to mask off the stripes for the polishing. I tried this some time ago and the tape ended up removing some of the paint, leaving a blotchy appearance where it was stuck.

I used Tamiya tape which didn't have any effect on the Krylon paint whatsoever. What brand of paint did you use?

I also used the krylon stuff. maybe I "dusted" the paint on to much. I wonder if I left with more of a wet final coat it would stand up to the riggors. incedentally, I use the 3M light green automotive tape, and never have had any problems with it. in fact it feels just like the tamiya tape, and is even the same color...who knows, it may be the same.

Here are a couple more shots; I added SNJ polishing powder to brighten the stripes, and also added dark gray panel line washes.

That's a terrific idea

The effect is very tasteful but the car still keeps the brute force feel.
It looks super!

Hi,

looks good so far.

Last Saturday I was at the Hockenheim racetrack and saw a polished Cobra, it looked like covered with chrome.

Really nice color choice you have been convinced of putting on! Itīs kind of going tone-in-tone! And the paint job looks really flawless. Great job!
