I was just wondering if anyone had any info on pros and cons about turbos for a 98 GSX..... I was looking to stick with either Greddy or HKS for a new turbo for my eclipse and was curious if anyone had any info for me.....

First off welcome to AF. A simple reading of the rules and seach would have turned up a number of answeres to this question. I suggest you do LOTS and LOTS more reading though, there are much better turbos out there than HKS and GReddy for half of the price. Personally I'd go with an Evo III 16G from a vendor such as Slowboy Racing, that should suit you pretty well. What are you looking for in terms of performance?

I have been doing a lof of research on the turbos for the GSX and i have actually heard of the Evo turbo you are talking about i once looked an an eclipse with one in it, but yea i am just looking for a nice dependable turbo that can take what i throw at it and i would eventually like to intercool the turbo system and so on..... i guess i am looking for a turbo that doesnt take forever to spool up and something that i can hook up to a boost controller and get more power if desired. I am also looking to rebuild the engine, i dont know how far i am planning to go with the engine, any ideas?

Yea, nice i looked at the turbos you were talking abut on slowboyracing.com and they look to be promising, thanks for the info....... do you have any ideas on the top speed limiter, or how to remove it?

The GSX doesnt have a limiter

The E316g would be perfect for you then. Quick spool up that puts down some good numbers and doesn't take a whole lot of mods to make it run wild. Injectors, pump, afpr, logger, and safc or dsmlink and you'll be tearing up the streets.

thanks a lot, it was very useful and this turbo is on that site right? also is it really true that the GSX doesnt have a top speed limiter? i thought all cars had one no matter what?

Yeah, Slowboy sells the E316g, but you can find it at a large number of other places too..it's a very widely used turbo. And no speed limiter so go as fast as you want.

OK, one more question, that evo III turbo you were talking about, thats made by mitsubishi right? i just want to make sure im looking at the right one, its about $600, the MHI EVO III 16G right? also, who makes that other turbo you were talking about, the E316g? Would the evo III be a better choice than the E316g, sorry so many ?'s im just not totally familiar with all the turbo specs.....

Yes, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) makes that turbo that you're looking at. The E316g is the Evo III(3) 16g, it's just a shortened term for it.

EDIT: Just so you don't get a turbo in the mail with no way to hook it up, you're going to also need the 2g install kit along with the turbo itself. Sorry I didn't mention this before, the little things always slip my mind. :)

no i had already planned on getting the install kit dont worry, not that car illiterate, lol, but yea ok i definately think i will stick with that turbo it looks like a good choice, can i also ask you to explain to me what "ported" and "Clipped" means, i know that is probably a really dumb ? but i just want to make sure i know what this all means. Also on the turbo, do you know about how much PSI it is pushing, or how much it is capable of? And also, would it be a good idea to pay the extra $ and get the inlet and outlet ported, or is it just one of those things you dont need? Also, would polishing the compressor cover be a good idea?

Referring to a turbo in terms of PSI is deceiving. A turbo can be cranking out 100psi, but only be flowing say 25 lbs/min of airflow, likewise, a different turbo can be turning out 50psi and still be flowing the same 25 lbs/min, that's why it's not always good to go by PSI ratings. Also, remember that the more PSI you're running, the more heat the turbo will be creating, therefore the main point is to creat as much airflow (lbs/min) as possible with as little PSI as possible. I'm assuming you're asking because you'd like to know about HP ratings? The E316g can put down roughly 350-375hp on a good street tune and supporting fuel mods. As for your question about porting and clipping, you'll find some good answers right here (clipping is right under porting): http://members.shaw.ca/costall/1000Q/answers-terms.htm#Whatisporting
I wouldn't spend the extra money on the polished compressor housing, being as most people can do it themselves and it's merely for looks, not worth the $$ in my opinion.

welcome to the fun house.

click the link in my sig below [NEW? ***] and start following links and reading from that thread. if you do that, you are probably about a week away from having more q's than you even know existed about your new 'lifelong project' and on turbo cars in general.

have fun and you should not worry about things like top speed limiters just yet. you don't have one and you are not going to set a land speed record. be safe and don't kill anyone.
