I went 5k miles on my oil change. and i keep hearing ticking and knocking comming out of the valves under the cams.. i hear metal on metal, rattaling really loud. and the only time i hear it go away is when im cruising at 50 or so, down the street.. A few people have told me its not the lash adjuster but, im hoping it is. i hear the tip of our lash adjsuters are 1mm, and i need atleast 3mm, so this is why my cars making weird noises. however, ive heard a lifters tick, and this is a lot louder and heavier. please get back at me or ask for another video...thanks

That doesn't sound like lifter tick to me. If it is coming from the head then it could be a collpased lifter.

with the horrible audio, its hard to tell. but you can easily check for a collapsed lifter by pulling the valve cover.
to answer you question about the lifters (lash adjusters), they have a 1mm opening, but that design was improved upon in 1999 with a 3mm opening. they are referred to as '99 lifters' or '3rd gen lifters'. you can get a set of 24 on 3Si for about $120. do a search for the details and thread link.
also, why did you go 5k miles before changing the oil? are you running some kind of full synthetic?

Im thinking its way more severe than a collapsed lifter. Heres another video with my jvcHDD cam, in a lot better quality, the other video was taken with my treo. Also, before all this happend i was racing an e36 m3 :screwy: . I dropped my gear to L/2, to prolong my rpm range. And i've also noticed my car having difficulty shifting through gears prob becasue i went 2,000 miles over, after my oil change however, it shifts a lot better.
Sound: It sounds like a tick on steriods almost as if its a hammer hitting "metal on metal"
background: 125k miles/auto/driven a bit hard. oil filter + 4qt 5w30 w/ 1qt lucus...changed 40 miles ago..i also flushed the engine before changing the oil.
Any comments/ideas or solutions to this disaster is greatly appriciated...
thankss'
lash adjusters 3mm? rockers? valves? :uhoh:

second video, much better audio quality. thanks.
the sound is definitely coming from the top end. i'm pretty sure its a collapsed lifter, there's really not much else it could be. please, pull the front valve cover. there are about 15 little bolts, if i remember correctly. you should be able to see right away what the problem is. if not, take a picture and upload it here and we'll tell you.

its very easy to check timing on the car. this woulld tell you whether or not you are are actually hitting a vavle/piston. that mechanic sounds very SHADY. consult us on AF.com fist as we know better than him what's going on with ur engine.

now im thinking about dropping in a new 3k motor from ebay' costing me $1,000 + to put it in!.....should i part it out? sell it as is? keep driving it till it breaks? :uhoh:
if i do keep the car any longer im gnna wnna do a 5spd conversion...i also dnt hav a front bumper, due to a minor accident, which insurance claimed was my fault becuase of my "faliure to yield." the bumpers is going to cost $500 painted..so i feel as if my best bet is to get rid of this thing? :frown: any advice is greatly appriciated thanks

sounds like a spun bearing...but that wouldnt be coming from the top end. also, a mechanic should pick up on that right away.
had to tell on laptop speakers lol.

k guyzz' i've narrowed everything down to two options. my first option is to find a vr4 front clip and completly swap out the motor/tranny as a summer project, with a few buddies. Or option B would be to buy this kit on ebay, and i need your guys help to tell me if it would fix the spun bearing/ticking noise out of my car, i was told by a mehcanic that i just need to rebuild my motor?!

i would say skip on the clip and just do the bearings.

yea, that looks like it has what you need and more. You could probably just get bearings way cheaper though.
whats wrong? dont like torque-steer? lol

haha' torque-steering sux, only because u wnna drift and feel the slick tires but cant, and are left in a state of confusion "fish-tailing". however, limited slip would help a bit. but again big project..would you guys recommend the swap? im trying to stay around 5k either way'

bearings are on the bottom end of the motor. drop the oil pan, then you can access the bearings. or if you have a hoist, you could pull the motor, put it on an engine stand, then just flip it upside down.
