I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cher. Larado sp*. I know this is a DSM forum but you guys know stuff. The key doesnt turn in the lock cylinder. We moved the wheel, stepped on the brake, and rattled it around for an hour and nothing. I checked every fuse and everything is good. So what do you think is at fault? I am going to replace the ignition lock cylinder. is that the best thing to start on?

I've seen this before. Depending on the car, it could be the cylinder itself, or it could also be the lever that is used to create the current loop. On some vehicle, when you turn the key, a metal lever moves and completes the switch. This in turn starts the vehicle. I have seen the lever jam and keep you from being able to turn the key. I don't know how the Jeeps are put together, but either way, it sounds like you need to start pulling apart the column. :(

Oh, are you sure that your key isn't screwed up??? After time they start to wear and depending on how sensitive your ignition is regarding fitment, that could be a problem. Do you have a spare key you can try?

try spraying some graphite down in there first... play with it for about 5 mins, if all else fails, pull it... then try and cleaning it...

When you pull it out, you should be able to see if it's worn (metal shavings/bent pieces)
