anti-lock brake problems

I have a 93 bronco w/ 4wheel anti-lock brakes. The light on the dash comes on every once in a while. somtimes while braking, the pedal will fade then the light comes on. What do I replace???

I have a 94,and after having the brakes totally redone(rotors,calipers,
pads,etc) mine came on intermittently then stayed on permanently. I
have the factory shop manual on CD,and after consulting it and my regular garage guy,both agreed the only way to really pull the specific code is to have a Ford "breakout" box. There are a number of little things involved with this particular ABS,and if any one of those things
malfunctions or isn't doing what it thinks it should,the entire ABS system
shuts down. The regular code reader will advise of a brake problem, but not much more. Of course, you still have reg. braking ability. Personally,I
prefer mine to be off!

Any additional learnings here? I just purchased a '93 and my ABS light comes on the first or second time I use the brakes after being cranked. The "regular" braking action is fine, but I can feel the ABS activating and pulsing the brakes when the light first comes on.

Hi, Hypsi87 - do you have a feel for the most likely culprits here? Any info would be great so I can dig in and make sure that the brakes are not being hurt in some way.

theres a lot of possibilities here. pull the abs codes then you'll have some direction. the most common ford abs failure i've encoutered are broken or damaged wires to the speed sensors there are 3 each front wheel has one and the rear diff has one. usually the wires to the rear diff get damaged or ripped out. sometimes metal particles get stuck to the magnet in the sensor and screw up the signal. if the rear brakes are out of adjustment or have a leaky cylinder both the abs and brake light come on a leak anywhere else will do this too. it's also possible for the abs pump/module to fail but 90% of the time it's a sensor problem. a bad master cylinder or porportioning valve could also cause problems. pull the codes!!!

There is a sensor on top of the rear diff. It cost 30 bucks from ford (called a sped sensor) takes 2 min. to change including washing your hands.

I'm uasley the first to say test not guess but 95% of the time this is the problem.

The ABS systems suck on these trucks. I don't know if its poor design or what. What I have done is disconnect the electrical plug at the ABS pump under the hood and pull the light bulb out of the dash. Problem solved and it feels like it brakes much better. We don't want no stinkin ABS!
