Tranny Question for 91 CIVIC

I have searched around and havent found the answer for my question. I have a 91Civic Std HB with a bad 1.5. I have a D16A6 that I want to install and set up for racing. WIll the 4spd transmission work with the 1.6 for racing or will I have to find a 5spd? Really no need for 5th gear in my case.

One other question. Does anyone know where I can find out what the gear ratios are for the 4spd and 5spd trannys, SI or non? Thanks

there have been several posts in the last few weeks on this subject..if you look on the main page where your post is there are quite a few posts about this question including the gear ratios your looking for. Its been talked about over and over though....with the engine your gonna use the 4spd has a really shitty gear ratio for racing...the si is your only real option unless you go to a different engine

Not to mention a crazy low final drive. Find an si tranny before you swap in the A6. You can use the STD tranny no problem, but you'll probably regret it in the near future. Whats wring with the current D15? Does it burn oil? I say drive it till it dies.

Thanks all for the info. I'll try and find those posts out there. I figured the 4spd. would be wrong for what I need. I am looking for good out of the corner pull. How big of a difference is ther between the SI and DX tranny? I can locate a DX but the SI is a real pain to find. Anyone know of a good place to find a SI?

Anyone know of lower $ mods to hop up a A6 for racing?

The gearing on an si and dx tranny are identical, the only difference is the final drive. The si FD is like 4.3:1 where the dx is like 3.7:1.
Its getting harder and harder to find a good si tranny nowadays. It seems like everyone is eyeing them. After all, si trannys are the ideal d series cable tranny to have.

So maybe the DX tranny might not be that bad if they are that close. I know the SI would be ideal but dam hard to find a good one without giving a bunch for it.

Dumb question but the DX would be in a 1990 4 Dr for exmaple. Right/Wrong? I have one located and he said it is in a 1990 4dr with 1.5. Does that sound right to anyone?

No if its in a 4dr then your cool. It definitely wont turn out to be an HF tranny thats for sure. It might be an EX tranny which is good, ask the guy what model sedan he has.

He actually has two 4dr cars. He gave me the VIN and I decodes them and one is a DX and the other is a EX. Having the choice of the two the DX would be better right?

Has anyone had any luck with buying a tranny off of e-bay? I have found a couple 88-91 civic SI trannys on there but just a little nervous about buying one. I'm converting to 5spd and dont know if it will have everything I would need. That is assuming it would be any good.

No, no get the EX, hands down. The EX trans is way better than the dx, I actually think the EX trans is equivalent to the SI, but dont quote me on that. Hey, maybe you can talk the guy down by saying that the EX is a crappier model than the dx and snagging the ex trans.:bigthumb:

What is the difference between the EX and DX? Do you know what the ratio is for the EX. I am not up to speed with that model at all. Is it sportier or something?

Never mind about the EX. The guy just called me back and he made a mistake and it is a LX and not a EX. OOPs on both parts I guess.

Now I would really say the DX is better than the LX.

The EX is between the SI and DX..

I had to make a correction in my last post. Found out it is not a EX it is in fact a LX.

LX has a DX tranny, absolutely no difference there. LX= DX. So it wont matter what tranny you pull.

Well since the LX and DX are the same then I will just pull the one that shifts the best and has less miles. I might have located an SI but now I know I have a plan B. Thanks to all.
