What is the difference?

I am looking to buy a used jetta and the rear struts need to be replaced to have the car safetied, every place I call for part says I need rear shocks, not struts.

the car is lowered with a H&K kit if that makes a difference?

Struts are shocks. The difference is, struts have springs attached to them and are structural while shocks mount inside or next to springs while not being structural. Both links are struts. Doesn't mean people won't call them shocks when they are actually struts. It's basically the same thing.
