I am currently interested in purchasing a 1994 Celica GT-4 from Japan. I live in Louisiana and was wondering if anyone knew if the Celica GT-4's were legal in the US.

Welcome to AF! :D

I'm pretty certain the GT-4 isn't road legal in the U.S. You could probably get away with using it as a track/off-road car only, or if you're sneaky, put some GT-4 parts onto a plain old U.S.-spec Celica... ;)

The GT-4 is around $35,000 for us. For that much money you can make your own. Just get a 3S-GE, turbocharge it, and scavenge some RAV4 4WD parts. In no way am I saying it's an easy job; just easier than importing. Tips? Call Rod Millen; their Ultimate Celica (although new body) uses the same setup, but taking wholly from the GT-4. Hell, they fitted the 3S-GTE plus all-wheel-drive into the 7th generation XYR chassis (which has a longer wheelbase and shorter overall length), I'm sure they can work out a U.S. GT-4 6th generation Celica replica.

You can still get turbo kits for 3S-GE engines? I've looked all over the web but can't find anything?

How complicated is it to fit RAV4 parts to make a FWD celica a 4WD? Wouldn't it be easier to fit original GT-Four parts?

Thanks

I was referring to U.S. residents. There are very few GT4s here (known as all-trac turbos) and a decent shop should be able to use Toyota's parts bin strategy to their advantage and use RAV4 parts for the Celica. Of course, if you can find GT4 parts fairly easily, then that should be the primary route to take. And over here, I think ToySport can turbocharge 3S-GEs, but that's just what one person said; gotta look into that. Of course, 3S-GTEs are pretty easy to find here too since the MR2 turbos were quite popular.

Turbocharging a 3S-GE is not quite a big deal...

you will need,

1.custom made or 3S-GTE exhaust manifold for the turbocharger

2.lower compression pistons unless you intend to run very minimal boost level(eg 6-7psi)...ive seen people use 1JZ pistons with great effect.

3.increase you fuel supply(3S-GTE has larger injectors,430cc to be exact)unless you intend to run very minimal boost level(eg 6-7psi)..

4.a turbocharger of course(CT26 will do if you're not after mad power)

5.intercooler,..the stock top really heat soaks..so try to put it in front..

these are just the major things...

easiest way is to get a 3S-GTE...but ive heard somewhere that the n/a engine uses more duration/lift than the turbocharged versions and the turbocharged versions have oil jets to cool down the pistons...can anyone confirm this please...

Does anybody know how many all tracs were sold in 90, 91, 92, and 93. Its the top car on my list but I can't find one within 300 miles. I live in Kansas City but there are hardly any cars out here. I wish I were in California or better yet, Japan.

Check out: http://huizen.dds.nl/~celica/en/celihist.htm It has a breakdown of production by year, but unfortunately not by country. However, I did find on another site the US production number, but I'm having trouble finding the site address. If I remember correctly it's no more than 4,000 imported over 4 years ('90-'93) with only like 26 being imported in '93. I'm kinda looking for one now myself...either an All Trac or Talon TSI AWD/Eclipse GSX, but it seems to me a lot of work (and money) has to be done to get power out of the Celica compared to the DSM's. My bud Jeremy has a '91 All Trac...TONS of stuff done to it: CS front end and hood, full ss exhaust, full TRD (I think) coilover suspension including swaybars and bushings, AP big brake kit all around, and recently bought a complete ST205 engine (wiring harness, turbo, and everything) and is balancing and blueprinting it top to bottom. He works at a Ferrari dealership in DC so he has contacts all over the globe so he can get parts mad cheap. Do a search on www.autotrader.com and look all over the US for them. I found about 5 or 6 for sale with reasonable miles, but they're all '90 models since that year was the most imported.

Parts can be hard to find but you have to look for parts for the MR2 turbo, it's the same engine. Also, you can get horsepower relatively easy because the turbo will handle up to 16-17 psi safely and a blowoff valve makes a big difference. Intercoolers also help a ton but I'm not sure where or how to find one that is alltrac specific.
