Sometimes the fuelpump will just stop working. It would not hurt changing the fuel pump. Its like the blower in your car the hvac, sometimes it will just stop, sometimes you have to hit it to make it hurt.

Electric fuel pumps will heat sink and fail on you. Normally, once they start spinning, they won't stop until you shut the car off. when you attempt to re-start, the pump won't run until it has cooled off. I would not just change the pump without doing a little diagnosis. A fuel pressure test, and listening for the pump to kick on would help in determining the issue. If fuel pressure checks out, you need to check for spark as you may have a crank position sensor, PCM or ICM problem. Also in keeping it simple, how old is your tune-up? Have you checked the vacuum lines going to the MAP sensor? The PCM (obd-II)/ECM (obd-I) checks EGR operation by comparing vacuum readings at the MAP before and after it commands the EGR to open. Post the exact code you got when you determined the EGR solenoid was an issue, as your car is a changeover year and could have OBD-I or OBD-II diagnostics.
