Well you're in a forum of camaro and firebird owners. It all depends on what you like in a car.

He really means 4th gen. 3rd gen was 83-92. 4th is 93-02. And for the LS1, you want a Trans Am from 98-2002. Preferably with the WS6 option.

no i believe he means do the swap yourself.
i agree too, id rather have a 3rd with a LS. sleeper... and way more fun. :]
that being said, what do you want in your car? driveabililty? im guessing you want a V6, and youre picking between a stang and a camaro/bird.
the stangs are a bit more expensive..but they hold value more..(not talking baout LS F-bodyS.)...and most of em are lighter.. however, the camaro and firebirds are USUALLy faster...
they both can go way faster than each other if you do a bunch of things on..they both have LOTS of bolt ons....
just a tip, if youre going for power..and get a 4th gen..be prepared for the tight engine bay.. im not sure about the stang..but ill admit its a nice car..
i had to pick between stang, bird/camaro..
and stangs were just too expensive for what i got.

Attaboy, either will get you where you want to go... quickly. Unless you're a real motorhead, your decision is down to visuals, because they are pretty close to being the same vehicle for all intents and purposes. (Here comes Mr Pbody...:uhoh: )

IMO the GTO's look like the lats version of the Mustang, Pontiac designers fell asleep on that one - IMO. Now, if you're talking about a 65-67 GTO, then well yeah... of course.

They have a 2004 GTO wich is a "buy now" for 13,000 on ebay with only 30K miles, but its one of those "rebuild titles" and the airbag has gone off. I believe it has CAI and some exhaust work done too if im rmembering the right one.

If you want some oomph and some change left over, you could look into an LT1 instead of an LS1. A little less power from the factory, but that can quickly be made up for with some bolt-ons. Despite what some people say (mostly LS1 owners), the LT1 is still a great motor.

you could buy a car with all the oil you have to put into GTO's. They even came out with a service bulletin to tell people to check their oil more than regular. lol

Its tough to find a v-8 4th gen in any kind of condition for that kind of money. With $10,000.00 you could be driving a -2,800 LBS car pushing +600 HP in like new condition. The lightest and the strongest is the one to pick IMO.

I had a nissan sentra that burnt more oil than gasoline. Ok not really but every time I filled it up, i would have to add a quart.
That GTO for 13k is a sweet deal. If I had the money I would buy it. I don't like air bags, anyway, so I would swap the steering wheel for one of those cheap jobbers you can get at autozone for $50.
Hotrod_chevyz: What are you talking about? v-8 4th gens for under 10k are a dime a dozen. Granted they are getting up there in mileage.

I agree on the 13K GTO is a deal. Ive seen a few deals like that around on them lately. Another couple years from now one will be in my price range i figure.
stepho:
All im saying is $10k is too much to spend on a high mile car. Especially one that has a good chance of being driven into the ground every mile it has traveled. The only ones worth buying are the low mile ones with no body or interior damage. Wich is hard to find for under 10K, especially if your talking the more prefered 98-02 models.
For that kind of money you could find a deal similar to the GTO, a low mile 98-02 bird already modded and just needing a bumper and some paint or something.

i know im gonna fry for this but hell with with...you could also get u a nice import... low miles, great shape, for 6.5-7k, and use the rest of your cash for some basic mods and still get a pretty fast car. just throwing out a curve ball. i seen a 99eclipse by my house for 4k that i would love to have as a second car and a daily driver, but knowing me, it may end up faster than my f1 lmao.....they are so cheap to mod its crazy!!

If you end up getting a forth gen get a 99-02 not a 98. The 98's computer was different and harder to mod. Just my 2cents

plus LT1s sound better.
I know in my area there are 6k - 8k LS1s popping up, and the price for an LT1 car is down to 4-5k

I couldn't agree more. Now that I think about it, a good exhaust system on an LT1 does sound better (personal opinion) than one on an LS1. Both are mean as hell and I can't knock either one.
The only problem with the older LT1's is, well, age. Older motors, harder to find in decent condition. Adn my advice would be to avoid the 93 LT1's, they lack some of the refinements of the later 94 and up LT1's.
