Hey,

I have just joined this site, it looks great.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

My ABS & Trac. lights are on. I am pretty sure it is the right front sensor.

Does anybody know how to get the lights off. I can not change the sensor right now and the lights are driving me crazy.

Thanks for your help.:p

Sorry but unless you change the sensor the light will continue to illuminate indicating you have a problem. Try a piece of black tape over the light if it gets too annoying until you can get it fixed.

How do you know that for sure? It is best not to guess and get it scanned with an ABS capable scanner which will also check wheel sensor output. Also, I would not rule out wiring to include the electrical connector at the hub and along the control arm. If you have a DMM you can check resistance of the wheel sensor. Around 1K ohm.

Bob..if a scanner turned it off, how long do you think it will be off for him? Untill he starts up the car agine? Thats what im guessing.

Hey Andrew, whats up? Hard to say but the ABS system runs an initialization test. If there was a bad wheel sensor the following should apply.

The EBCM performs 1 initialization test each ignition cycle. The initialization of the EBCM occurs when 1 set of the following conditions occur:
Both of the following conditions occur:

* The EBCM detects that there is a minimum of 500 RPM from the PCM via a serial data message.
* The stop lamp switch is not applied.

OR
Both of the following conditions occur:

* The vehicle speed is greater than 16 km/h (10 mph).
* The stop lamp switch is applied.

The initialization sequence may also be commanded with a scan tool.

The initialization sequence cycles each solenoid valve and the pump motor, as well as the necessary relays, for approximately 1.5 seconds to check component operation. The EBCM sets a DTC if any error is detected. The initialization sequence may be heard and felt while it is taking place, and is considered part of normal system operation.

The EBCM defines a drive cycle as the completion of the initialization sequence.

Not a whole lot. Take a look at this vid.http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=64778

I was one of the first persons to try to save this guys life. Sad story.

You know what, this guy should just get it changed out. Even if the light went off for 1 day, it will be on the next.

I agree that it will pop right back on as soon as you drive the car. The harness coming out of the hub on my left front got cut somehow last summer, and until I repaired it, the ABS/trac-off lghts came on as soon as the car moved after resetting it. I repaired the harness with crimp connectors and liquid electrical tape. I'm not changing the hub until it starts making noise, and so far the repair has held with no issues.

Hey,

Thanks for all your replies.

I did have it scanned and the shop told me it was the right front wheel sensor.

I guess the best thing to do is to just replace it.

I don't think it is a hard job. I will just need a 36mm (I think) for the main center nut.

Any tips?

Thanks

Mike

Our Tips & Maintenance subforum has a guide to replace a hub assembly.
