is it safe to jack the car up from the rear tow thingys? seems like if theyre strong enough to pull the car out of a ditch by they should support some weight...
gotta get all 4 wheels off the ground to do the driveshaft...found this site
http://www.vr4stealth.com/jacking_instructions.htm
but i dont really like the rear jacking points he used so im looking for other options.

Yeah you can use them as lift points but I wouldnt use a jackstand on it.. way way to easy to fall.. or slide.. your going to be banging away getting some of those bolts off.. I would use the side right behind your front tire on the pinch weld

was trying to avoid that as well, since i just repaired all the rust and damage to the pinch welds. eh, i guess ill have to figure something out. I was gonna try cutting a pinchweld-shaped groove in a 2x4 so as to avoid damaging it, but figured it would brobably just break since the stress would be along the grain of the wood. May have to just go back to that plan and fool around until i get it right.
could i support it on the member that the tow thingys are bolted to?
edit: nm...just went out and peeked and theres not really anything substantial there.........Fucksticks!

Alright, how about this...what if i get a steel bar just thin enough and long enough to go through the holes on both tow points, then put a stand right next to each tow point...do you that that would be strong and stable enough? i mean, i dont think even the full weight of the car is strong enough to shear 3/4" of solid steel at 2 locations, let alone only half the weight....??
what do you think about that possibility, and does anyone have an idea of where i might find a solid steel bar approximately 3/4" thick by about 4' to 5'...?
could probably even fit a 1" thick bar though...
ill have to swing by home depot on lunch tomarrow

i usually just jack the car up in the emergency jack places on the side. I've even put stands there before, worked fine for me. Of course, I always throw other stuff up under the car as well so if something does happen to the stands, it will fall on whatever esle i have (such as a wheel) instead of on me.

exact jacking points and stand positions i use too. i also know many other people use these points too. from the front, you can jack under the front cross member; there is an oblong shaped metal piece there for that reason. for the rear, you can jack under the rear differential...if its accessible (most ppl with aftermarket exhausts cannot reach the rear diff). but unless your jack goes really high, the front and rear jacking points won't be sufficient to raise the car high enough for you to crawl under it. so the best way is to jack at each emergency point and go around the car.
here are the factory jacking positions, posted on...you know where...stealth316. http://www.stealth316.com/2-raisecar.htm

That first link is retarded. Lift the front from the center jack point, and put a jackstand on each front side point, use the lip where it is twice as thick, all the way at the front. Then jack from the rear center point and put a jackstand at each of the rear side locations, once again all the way back it is twice as thick.

i notice that i couldn't really jack the car up in the rear.. had to use the jack stand and push it somewhat right in the middle of the car from the rear.. and jackstand got stuck somehow, now i can't even move my car because of the stupid jackstand.

That first link is retarded.
i agree, but just thought i would include it for the others.
jacking is simple, if you're smart about it.

if you have a turbo, jack it under the rear diff. if you have an NA, there is a special jacking point the extends down from the rear cross member in the center. you may not be able to see it from the rear b/c of the exhaust, but you can see it from the passenger side just in front of the rear tire.
not sure how you got the jack stand stuck, or what you were trying to do. but if it really is stuck, then simply jack up the car to get it UNSTUCK....c'mon now.

well i was going to install my own custom downpipe that i made on.. but then somehow my jackstand was broken and couldn't jack all that high, well at least not high enough for me to get under with the pipe. then i dropped it back down and it got stuck somehow in the middle of the car, and now i can't jack it up for some reason. and my car is a n/a so yeah. i'll probably have to borrow another jack stand from a relative and jack it up then pulled mine out.

if your jack will not go high enough, then put something beneath the jack (wood or cinder block) and THEN jack up the car.

I think he is referring to a jack as a jack stand.

Never, ever, get under your car if it is only held up by a jack, jacks fail. People die or get seriously injured all the time because they are stupid. Don't let Darwin get you.

LOL!!!
i was doing something recently worthy of a darwin award: ripping up 20 yr old bushes with a come-along. i DID notice the potential danger before it happened, so i got behind a tree and when the bush ripped out of the ground it shot straight out at me like a bullet. good thing i was behind the tree, LOL. it was friggin sweet, i should have gotten a video of it. needless to say, i only did it once.

that would be a great idea.. but then my jack is stuck under the car, being a pain in the ass just to get it out, i'll try that when i get it out though.

so which is stuck under the car? the jack or the jack stand? or both? i'm very confused here. i won't try to understand anymore of it. i'm sure you'll get whatever unstuck with the aid of another jack.

it's the jack, and the jack stand is stuck on the rear side under the car. it's like it went through or something. so yeah

if its the jack stuck under the car...which is what im taking it as...jack it as high as you can and throw an inch or 2 of wood under the tires...make sure the ebrake is on. when you lower it, the car will be higher off the ground.
