Check Gas Cap?

2004 GT2, having a "check gas cap" message on the HUD when I start the car now.. Have removed cap off/on with car on and off, nothing will make the message disappear. Best I can do is press the arrow under the HUD and make it go away until I turn the car off again. This appeared one morning when just starting the car for the day... Have tried turning the gas cap multiple times, multiple clicks to see if this would help too, but nothing.

Anyone have any ideas? Nothing much in the manual on this one other than to check the gas cap? =P

You may have to use a scanner to remove the code and see if it returns. There may be a leak somewhere else in the system besides the cap itself that is causing this issue.

Thanks for the reply! Oddly enough, when I got in the car tonight, I got the check engine light too... I went ahead and put gas in the car (was just under 1/4 tank, filled it up to 3/4) and all the messages/lights went away.

My car is possessed!? Or, I've never had gas run that low, and it's got some sort of other issue.

I think your gas cap is not holding the pressure. You may need a new cap. I bet that might be it.

I've got an '04 also that had this problem. I replaced it with a locking gas cap from Autozone for about $15.00. Haven't had another issue in over 40,000 miles.

I agree that the gas cap is your issue. Replacing it should take care of you problem.

Replaced gas cap as suggested for $12 at Canadian Tire. Fixed my issue immediately, also my check engine light problem was corrected.

Thanks for all the info guys, appreciate the fact I didn't pay someone $90/hr to diagnose such a simple problem.

Believe it or not, after 200km, I am back to square one. Check gas cap and check engine light are back on. I am starting to wonder if I have received a bad cap again?! I guess I'll head back to the store this week and see if I can exchange it for another, before once again, paying for diagnostics at the dealership :frown:

The dealership has that gas cap as well for approx the same price, well thats here in the U.S.A. yeah..i would return that one and get another one and see what happens. let us know how that works out then. If that is not doing it, could be a bad relese valve in the tank. It does let pressure out as well. I beleve its by the tank and there is a black shield over it. Just another thought.

I've been having the same problem. (04gtp) New AC Delco cap did not fix the problem. Ideas?
