The Chilton general repair manual for the 88-93 GM line says that with OBDI, it is is possible to obtain "5 of the 20 parameters on the data stream" by applying a 3.9 Kohm resistor across terminals A&B on the Assembly Line Diagnostic Link.
The 5 parameters readable are mode status, oxygen sensor voltage, rpm, block learn, and idle air control.
(I would like to comment that there are many grammatical errors in the chilton manual BTW)
As I don't have a tachometer, and would like to know my RPM, is there a way to read the rpm count off the data stream without a scan tool (as the manual states), and if so how would I do so?
If I were to find an ancient OBDI scan tool somewhere, would I be able to read my RPM in real time?
In effect, what I "gots to know" is whether or not I can use the ALDL as a ghetto-fix RPM gauge.

I should have looked harder before I asked; Google was most helpful in answering my questions. The bottom line is that it can be done.
