a413 shift problem

i have a 1994 acclaim with a A413 tranny , with 155,000 miles and was working fine but i wanted to make the needle for the shift lever match the gear letter so not thinking i tried to adjust it by loosening the shift cable under the hood instead of under the dash. Since then the tranny sounds like it shifts fine from 1st to 2nd but will not shift into drive. :banghead: I am not sure if this is caused by me moving the linkage but i have tried moving the shift cable and have not got any good results yet am i overlooking something or has anyone got a solution to my delima any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance :banghead:
