Temp light flashing

Greetings,
Just a couple days ago I noticed the 'check gauges' message flashing abruptly on my HUD. I had my wife jump in the car and start driving while I stared at the instrument panel. The red temp light flashes whenever the check gauges message pops up. This is from a warm start as well as when the engine is heated up and going down the highway. While idling and the car is not moving, the temp light does not pop on and off. Also, the car temperate never reaches any abnormally high temps. I am not running any mods except a CAI. It seems to be getting worse and the temp light now stays on for most of the time.
Hopefully it is just a sensor? If it is, where is it located?
