1980 F250 Front Hubs

Okay, this is my first time here, so be gentle.
I've got an old ranch-truck where the front (manual locking) hub needs to be pulled so I can put on a new front rotor....it actually wore down enough to where the disc separated from the hub housing.
The Chilton's manual I've got is zero help, since it doesn't provide a schematic for '80 model hubs, and is ambiguous about the "lockring seated in a groove in the outer hub".:banghead:
The side-view exploded diagram is no help, since the ring in the outer hub is just a plain-wire ring, and I'd rather not trash that sucker taking it out.:newburn:
Any suggestions for a proper exploded diagram?
How about any tips from someone who has (successfully) done battle with one of these critters?
Or should I just treat it like a lame horse and shoot the damned thing?:smokin:
Thanx.
