90 Ford Tempo 2.3 Automatic won't shift

Original problem was it woud start up and shift fine, then after warming up the clutch would stick in neutral. I reset the computer, tried again and got a 29 diag code indicating the VSS. As I was replacing the VSS I noticed the red wire to the VSS was cut. I put a connector on it and taped it well but now the transmission will not shift down to the next gear (always in 1st). Next step????
