Have a 1999 Taurus with 3.0. I would like to tow a boat, motor and trailer, total weight about 1400 lbs. Have heard Taurus transmissions are not the best. Towing would be mostly highways with few hills. Is this too much weight for this car?

you could probably get away with it, but it wouldnt be a good idea. it would depend on the tongue weight.
its not so much a matter of "can the engine do it"
its more about the brakes being up to it, the radiator being able to get rid of the heat generated by the engine, the trans being able to hold, and the front wheels being able to stay on the road enough to maintain control...
remember, the car itself only weighs about 3500 lbs. if you have 1400 hanging off the back, and too much is on the rear. the front will want to lift up.
i'd stick with the max that is listed by the factory.
if you do end up doing it, just dont sue AF because you took our advice to mean that it was a good idea
