This is an interesting problem which has me stumped.
I recently got a new exhaust. Then a few days later, if at all connected.
I went to turn the car on and it didn't start. I heard no sound at all when I turned the key. Hours later I turned it on with no problems.
battery is fine, alternator is fine, all power is check. Once more, there is no sound what-so-ever.
I got stuck in my car today for 4 hours... under the baking sun. I tried every 30 minutes to turn my car on so I could leave....
at 4 hours 5:55 est I turned the key and it started..........
---
Duplicated the problem, car won't start on Neutral or Park.
My dad says it could be the solenoid or the neutral relay switch.
Help please........... I work as a pizza delievery. and if i can't drive then i do dishes for hours on end....... which is not worth it....
plus i'm working for a ring for my girl... help anyone....

gotta be something to do with the neutral safety switch. I believe they are prone to sticking. Try working the push button release on the selector a bit and move the gear selector through its range some to free it up.

Jims right it could be the park/neutral safty switch.
BUT a bad ignition switch can also do the same thing.
Pretty sure the PNSS is located in top of the trans by the shift cable on your 96'.
Check the wires to it and maybe check that its got power with a volt meter.
