What is the carb # for the 70 Ram Air III cars? What is the difference between the CA and Federal Carb's that they got?
Im looking into getting a new carb for my Formula Firebird, because the Holley 6210 series just is not cutting it, I was told I need larger then a 650cfm, and was told that the Rochester Q-Jet's for these came stock for 750cfm non-ram air, and 800cfm for Ram Air and Ram Air IV models? Is this accurate? I cannot image running an 800cfm on my 400, 750 yes, but not an 800 from the factory.
if you could help me out, I would love it. Also looking into getting the Jet Q-Jet, State 2 Carburator they sell online for around $340, I was wondering if this would be a good replacement for the carb that is on it now? I never had a Q-Jet on it, Always had the 6210 series, but after rebuilds, and countless tunes, I just want a factory or factory replacement carb that doesnt need alot of work to dial in, will stay dialed in, and gives me more power.

9C,
Not exactly sure, but I believe the 7040271 is the "manual trans" and 272 is the "auto trans". There may have been different numbers for the California cars, too.
Pre-'73 Q-Jets were 730 CFM on large V8s. Smaller engines got the 580 CFM version (according guestimates). 326 4-bbl. would be an example of the little one.
'73-newer are all 800 CFM. Even the 305 Chevy got an 800. The secondary air valve prevents the engine from "over carbing" itself.
Cliff Ruggles, of "Cliff's Q-Jets" in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, is the best Pontiac Q-Jet man on the planet. He has cars running mid-9s with a single Q-Jet and no power adders (Pontiac V8s). He can dial one in for you, and you will be amazed at both the performance and the economy. Cliff can supply you with the correct numers for a given application, no "I believe" involved. Whether or not he can supply the correct CARB is another matter. Some of those are rare as hens' teeth. And beware E-Bay. There are a lot of restamped carbs out there.
I would suggest Jim Hand's "How to Build Max-performance Pontiac V8s" by SA Designs. It contains all the accurate and current information about the Pontiac, including a chapter by Cliff concerning the Q-Jet.
