Turboback Exhaust Question

Would having custom turbo back exhaust from say exhaust pros (3 inch) be the best thing to do performance wise and cost wise for full exhaust? And my muffler is only a 2.5 inch ID so would having 3 inch all the way and then having that muffler restrict it a lot as opposed to a 3" one?

yeah, best bang for the buck, and yeah the 2.5 will restrict alot as apposed to a 3" but, a megan N1 style 3" muffler only off ebay is going got $50....

How much do you think the custom piping would be. Would aluminum alloy be a lot cheaper than stainless steel?
What kind of power increase is felt with full 3" piping?

you need a new downpipe to go with the exhaust. get one from RRE they are the best. then get a custom bent exhaust from anywhere, should be pretty cheap. make suer they weld the rung for the 2nd o2 sensor in there too. and get a testpipe to go with it. should be good for 10-15hp with the turbo you are running...
remember that the best exhaust for a turbo is none at all!

the exhaust shop cant do a custom downpipe too??
What I have right now is stock downpipe, test pipe, 3" catback, 2.5" muffler...

You are better off going with a pre-built downpipe. I have seen too many exhaust shops screw up the flex section when they attempt to fabricate them. You will also have to go through the hassle of buying the correct flange, O2 sensor bung and flex section, then paying them to assemble. You might as well just buy the downpipe.

I actually think a turboback 3' exhaust with a test pipe and 3 inch muffler would make more than an extra 15hp on the evo3 vs stock. I've seen like 8hp increase just with a muffler.. I dunno though 10-15 seems a little conservative.

10-15 to the wheels, probably 20 to the crank, also no fuel mods ~ low boost issues.

that was a good one. last time i asked a shop they quoted me for about 400 buck plus my muffler for a turbo back exhaust.

Ok, I think Im going to upgrade the full exhaust and then do the fuel pump to walbro 255 later. I am looking at the apexi n1 catback exhaust on ebay but i need a downpipe that will connect perfect, preferably without a cat. Anyone know one? Will the downpipe connect direct to the exhaust manifold with a perfect fit?

Yea those are kinda expensive... I found this one on ebay, would this bolt right up perfect? And does this one look like it eliminates the cat?

Oh I see, so would that bolt up to the o2 housing then? That downpipe is really straight, is that what it has to be like for awd models?
Would that downpipe, custom 3" piping to this muffler be a good idea then?

I'm not too sure about that downpipe, but just be leary about it if you do get it, expect some fitment issues. And that muffler....I don't think it's a genuine Apexi N1, I just think it's an aftermarket N1 "style" muffler, which may have a different sound. If I were you, go with a trusted downpipe, custom 3" exhaust, and an original Apexi N1. :2cents:

There is a difference in shape between the fwd and awd downpipes right? Which one is straighter cuz that dp is straight and others i see have a pretty drastic bend in them.
I found this, it shows halfway down the bends needed for awd and fwd...

I took a good look at my stock downpipe and it seems like its pretty straight like the one on ebay. So Im going to order the one off of ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Stainless-Steel-Downpipe-Eclipse-GSX-AWD-95-96-97-98-99_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33633QQihZ002QQitemZ 120110189402QQrdZ1
There shouldnt be fitment issues since it replaces the cat and I am going to get the catback custom made when I get the downpipe on. Im gonna order this muffler also
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3-INLET-240SX-S13-S14-SR20-N1-TURBO-MUFFLER-EXHAUST_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33636QQihZ006QQ itemZ160108252563QQrdZ1
So that will be full 3" turboback exhaust which will hopefully flow a lot better than the restricting setup now and also sound nice. What do you all think?

great buy! but i dont know how that muffler is going to sound, its a knock off. a buddy of mine had one, and the inside of the muffler broke, the part with the holes, and was rattling around inside the muffler and he sounded like a pissed off kid in a honda when just cruzing, and under boost, it sounded like the back of the car was going to blow up! just be cairful with it... :2cents:
EDIT: same downpipe i have! i got the AWD Exhaust because i was getting really close to a AWD conversion, but then i got destracted...

Will having full 3" exhaust help the turbo to spool a lot faster? Because I dont hit full boost (14psi) until like 5k rpm

i have a 3 inch megan downpipe on mine. It was a bit of a bitch getting it to fit. the flanges going to the test pipe didnt line up at all. It took an extra hour and a trip to the parts store to get some couplers and some 3 inch exhaust pipe. Fixed that problem and then the flex part of the exhaust was rubbing on the oil pan, so i got some exhaust wrap and fixed that problem. Now that i put the evo3 on i guess it sits lower so i now have about a 1 inch gap between the exhaust and the oil pan. But since then i heard that they fixed the fitment issue with the megan downpipes for the awd. All things considered i still think it was a good buy, it just wasnt direct replacement. It did line up with the o2 housing though. Just thought id share my dp story.

I called exhaust pros today and they were being gay and said that they wouldnt touch the car because the downpipe eliminates the cat. They even said that they wouldnt touch it if i put the downpipe on and then had them finish the rest.
The funny thing is, I had them put 3" catback on last year and I had a test pipe on there so i dont see what the hell the difference is..
But anyways I have a friend with a local exhaust shop so im going to him.

yeah, shops around here wont touch mine, but i had mine made with a cat, and my buddy and i made the test pipe that i could bolt in place of the cat... universal cat off ebay was only $35 by catco, and the test pipe is basically free if you have a friend with a welder... ;) also, bolting back on the cat for inspection, makes life so easy!

I second that, no emissions in South Carolina either. I did my whole exhaust work with in my front driveway without a welder. You can pretty much get an exhaust to bolt up anywhere u want with enough cutting. Make sure u leave enough space to bolt in a cat when its time for emissions and ull be fine. Thats all i did with the talon with 4 years of inspections. The only time it had a cat on was on emissions day, and 2 hours after that it was off and in the closet waitin for next year

i bet you could take your exhaust off, and then just bring it to the shop and have them bend the 3" pipes to the right shape.
seems a bit overkill and fitment might not be so great but it would be worth it to drive back and go 'oooh! look you guy's made this exhaust and it's not connected to a cat! i'm telling them where i got it!'
losers.

i used to work at jiffy lube, and i used the "IV drip" into the manifold with the full throttle bottle... its some green shit! works so good though! its definatly worth the $50 (unless you work their like me and get shit for free)
Paul, my turbo goes form nothing to 18psi instantly, then drops back to 15psi, output allows the air to flow past the turbines and allow more hot air in quicker, so yes, the exhaust WILL help A LOT with spooling

I got the car back this morning from my friends dads exhaust shop and not only is it a lot louder and deeper sounding, but it spools way faster and pulls harder. Im very happy with it. He ended up having to cut the downpipe before the flex section because it was touching the oilpan and bending and adding a small section to fix it. I am probably going to turn the boost down to about 14 pounds because it hits 17 right now really fast. I just dont want to blow the motor and then be f***ed royally.

He said that I will need to get a different wastegate like an HKS 54mm one to stop it from having boost creep. Does anyone know why this is or anything else about it?
