Worried mum had car crushed after dangerous driving

A Richmond mother had her son's "souped-up" car crushed to stop him getting into trouble but then became a victim of his angry reaction.

Jayden Robert Baxter, 18, appeared in the Nelson District Court on Monday, having previously admitted charges of dangerous driving, threatening, disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence, intentional damage and resisting police.

Defence lawyer Mark Dollimore told the court Baxter's mother had become sick of him "getting into trouble with his car", and had the "souped-up vehicle" crushed.

This had been a major contributor to the unemployed teenager's subsequent behaviour, Mr Dollimore said.

During a previous court appearance, police said Baxter had been drunk at his mother's house on January 28 and became angry, taking her handbag while she was asleep and throwing it across the street, and smashing her bedroom windows.

He then went on a "smashing spree" in the house, throwing a computer and household items, before taking a digital camera and threatening to damage it if his mother did not hand over her car keys.

Mr Dollimore said Baxter's family was in court to support him, and he had apologised.

Judge Peter McAloon said having Baxter's car crushed was "more dramatic" than any action he could take against him.

Alcohol and substance abuse had triggered Baxter's behaviour, the judge said. Baxter was "extremely fortunate" to have his family's support.

He had expressed remorse, and had repaired much of the damage.

"Your mother has asked for the balance of the reparation to be left within the family and I'm prepared to do that."

Judge McAloon sentenced Baxter to 200 hours' community work and nine months' supervision.

He disqualified him from driving for nine months, banned him from owning a car for the same period, and remitted $2000 of his outstanding fines.
