I was at the Toledo NNL model car show this weekend, and Revell had the Civic Si and Hatchback on display. They showed the built boxart models and test shots of the kits, they approved the tooling on Friday so they'll be available in December or January.
They are incredible kits! Two body variations for each, basically stock and custom bumpers/ground effects. The Si comes w/oversized stock rims and two sets of custom rims. The Hatchback shares the custom rims, and has its own set of 5 spoke rims. The Si engine is stock, the hatchback engine has a setup like the Integra kit, with what looks like a cold air intake and a big conical K&N filter. Both kits will have two sets of taillights as well, stock and Altezza style.
Rumors were going around that they are likely doing the Focus SVT and 2003 Mustang Mach I next year, and perhaps a Subaru WRX as well. We shall see when the toy fair happens in January or February. I for one would love a full-detail Scooby with engine, intercooler, and tuner parts. They are also looking at resurrecting the old Corrado kit, I really pushed myself on that one, they know where the tooling is and have looked at it and they do want to make it available again. Apparently the tool is a very expensive one, using proprietary machinery from the company that Revell AG used to contract that model, and that's why the kit's always been expensive and hard to find. I believe they want it in their Tuners lineup, and if they can find a solution to the expense of modifying the tooling to run on more common injection-molding machinery, we could see that kit next year as well. Corrado's were $35 kits over 10 years ago, the last one I saw on eBay went for something like $263 to a Corrado nut.
I'll post pics when I have time, I took a bunch of pics this weekend at the show and at the Packard museum in Dayton on the way home.
I also mentioned this forum to a number of people there, including a couple of Revell employees and a couple of the current editorial staff (Pat Mulligan and Andy Lillienthal) from Scale Auto magazine. Andy had a really cool new Fujimi Civic Type R on display.

questions- are the Revell Civics going to be as cheap and available as the Revell Acura ITRs? And will wal-mart have them? :)

wish someone would make the latest generation civic coupe tho... ill pick up a couple SI's for fun (when i actually find the time to make them). im really interested to see how they come out. The integra is ok but a bit boxy. Hope they capture the respective cars well and i hope they've devised a better way to attach wheels.

You should of knocked em off, sold em on ebay, made millions :D
Or made resin casts of them, and sold millions of them, beat revell to it...;)
I can't wait till they come out, I might do the full works on one, like I did on the ITR.

The following are pics of test shots, the kits will NOT be molded in these colors. The Revell engineer at the table told me they just signed off on the tooling this past Friday, and the kits will be made in China, shipped to the US for finished packaging. Look for them around Christmas or in January.

I agree, they do have a much smaller spoiler which looks like a stock ITR spoiler for it. Basically it can be built w/o a spoiler, w/the ITR spoiler, or "the beast". Same w/the hatchback. Lots of possibilities, and lots of opportunities for other aftermarket body kits as well, since the bumpers/side skirts are separate pieces. These look very much like models that were designed by modelers, same as w/the ITR which was a pleasure to build. The custom rims will be chrome plated and shared by both kits. Headlight and taillight bezels will be chrome as well.

I don't get it. Why did they go 1/25??? I mean, isn't their market research division professional enough to see that all (for the exception of the new AMT and Revell models) Japanese cars' models are in 1/24 and that people, interested in those types of cars, will be looking for that scale to be able to add them to their collection. IMO, that's a definite and a serious marketing mistake. And I will not be geting them (just as the ITR, and the F&F AMT models)

Ales,
When you pony-up the $700,000. it costs to tool-up a new kit, you can decide what scale it will be. AMT and Revell were making 1/25 kits long before the japanese companies were even in business. I'm glad they don't take more tips from the japanese like, NO ENGINES! With no engine, it's just a paint job with wheels.

If they took more tips from the Japanese, maybe we could see a decent molding from American companies then. I would love that. :D

I'm sure they're happy with their "competence" when people who usually build Japanese cars don't buy their kits. And the quality of Revell's and AMT's molding tells quite a lot about their competence, or lack of it :D

I view my remerks as constructive criticism, not arrogant rambling. And as you can see I am not the only one that feels the way i do.
And is doing something for 40 years reason enough to do it in the same way in the future? I don't know, but to me it's just common sense that ppl who model Japanese and European cars in 1/24 will want their collection to be in 1/24. And yes, if the marketing people don't understand that, I think they are incompetent. It is my opinion, and the 40 years of them making models will not change it.

 Talk about Rice Deluxe! I dont like them at all, the coupe looks alright but, bloody hell! Its like the "Honduh" thread that Pman posted.
If Revell have had so much success in 1/25th why would they want to change? I have had no problems with molding on Revells at all, I think its as good or better then Tamiya. New AMT kits are nice aswell, if Revell and AMT are so "crap" compared to Tamiya why is Revell one of the biggest model makers around?
Maybe its because they provide ALOT more choice when you buy your model, and also because they make just about everything under the moon. They give you double the amount of parts then a Tamiya kit aswell.
I say to all of the people who whine about Revell & AMT, if you don't like them...Shutup, stop telling us your crap and keep buying your Tamiyas!! If you dont like Revells then leave them alone, don't buy their unique "lowrider or tuner" series and just keep buying stock cars & normal racing cars from Tamiya...
Stop giving Revell crap, they are there making models, they give people jobs, they give the public modelling society something to do and most importantly..Revell are there from their choice, if they decided to shut down then just imagine the amount of kits we would all loose access to.
Go pick on someone your own size! :bloated:
I'm sick of this Tamiya favouring crap!

I have to tell ya, You all spent all that time typing up those arguments, and I didn't even read all of them. :p
It all could of been summed up by saying, Revell Doesn't want to be the same scale as the Japanese Companies. Because If you were so fussed about that, you would either only buy Revells kits or only japanese kits.
But of course, Revell Is cheaper, and is more common in places where people don't wanna buy Japanese kits, for their price tag. But then again, I have heard that People in Asia find it somewhat difficult to find Revell kits (I may be wrong). So in that case, looks like the Japanese companies have the edge on the market.
I'm not overly bothered buy the difference in the scale, in some cases, there is only a few millimetres the difference. And as I said before, at least the wheels will look bigger and the aftermarket exhaust tips will look fatter.

Yeah but even if they can't find Revells or have difficulty finding them doesn't mean they can't order off the internet. Besides, Asian modelers probably like the Rice cars and Imports in their country, not the Muscle cars and Lowriders etc from America.
You buy models of cars you like, and if you live in a country full of Imports, you go out and buy models of those because thats what you see, thats what you get influenced by and its what is the most popular in your area. Notice how most American modelers have a big collection of Musclecars? :bloated:
Oh well I still like Musclecars more, but living in a country with all sorts of cars around you doesn't make it easier to pick a side to go with.
In my opinion, its all a waste of time, people who fight about Revells and Tamiyas are fighting more so for the brand, not the models they make. I mean it in ways of quality etc, I think the biggest mistake that Revell made is moving their models to China to get molded and casted. That is stupid! The old Revell kits that are made in the US are very good, they have nice detail and they have extremely tough plastic compared to other brands.
This is only what I get, not others. I also think that it doesn't matter at all about molding (flash & molding lines) because you prepare your model before you paint it anyway, if you get models with less molding mistakes your just lazy :D, I think I'll just stick to Revell for now.

Not bad!!! I'll probably get 1 or 2 of each! Throw them into my display case! But we'll see!

Notice how most American modelers have a big collection of Musclecars?
No :finger: :D
but living in a country with all sorts of cars around you doesn't make it easier to pick a side to go with.
I feel your pain. ;)
But just one thing, you have a RX-7, and prefer to build muscle cars?
Sorry, I just don't see them mixing...

Yeah, I agree-because that's what's familiar and they were the coolest cars around back then. And just like Hondas and Toyotas (or anything from Japan, Inc.) now, they were very cheap and reliable used cars, easy to work on too. I went through a muscle car phase, I bought most of the kits and built many of them, and there were so many good magazines covering the subject that it made it easy to make great models of them. The whole scenario may look silly anywhere else in the world, our love of SUV's is even worse. Let's see, would I rather drive a truck or a sports car??? (Look at my name and you'll find the answer).
If you go to a car show/cruise night here, you'll see many amazing restored muscle cars. Hey, there's even a guy locally w/a Valiant Charger (w/a hemi 6??!!) and a Valiant Ute...that gets some head scratching going on here.
People definitely build what they're familiar with and what interests them...and the car shows here in the US will look a lot different when the guys w/all the street rods and muscle cars have died off and the gray-haired dudes with kids old enough to be building their own cars will be showing off their restored Tuners are talking about the good old days! It will happen...

No, I haven't seen any gray-haired guys w/restored tuners telling their kids how good the old days were! In the car-show food chain, the street rodders have grandchildren, and many of the the muscle cars/street machines crowd have kids old enough to be driving.
The tuners here are mostly driven by teens/20's. To a guy like me (42), I have to watch it when I call people in their 20's "kids"! To me I mean no disrespect at all (I'm just a big kid myself) but you never know who might take that as an insult. I dig tuners 'cause I've seen everything when it comes to street rods/street machines/customs/muscle cars. I dig seeing something new. And I was driving a tuner of sorts (Honda) 23 years ago...
I wonder how many family feuds have started when Dad's got a muscle car/street machine (or minivan/SUV), and Junior's got a hopped-up Honda?
Now for the clairvoyant, if you drive a tuner..what are your kids going to be interested in driving???? 10 to 1 it won't be a tuner.

Wow, what a thought....
Can you imagine a huge restoration aftermarket for Civics? Classic Civic, 1st Gen Civic, Year One Civic, etc... Well, that's assuming the cars actually hold-up the interest when the "kids" get older and can afford something else. I don't see Honda fans jumping into GM or Ford products, but I do see them going for BMW or Audi. IMHO, once you've driven a good RWD or AWD car there is no going back....

How true, and how sad at the same time. There's simply no excuse for the domestic companies to continue doing business the way they have. Why GM/Ford/Chrysler cannot make cars that are as desireable to own over the long run is purely economic. They pinch pennies and beat up on their suppliers and then cry foul when their cars can't compete w/the Japanese. My gauge of how good a car really is can be seen after it's 10 years old. Is it still in good shape? How many repairs have been required? Is it still worth anything?
Those questions mean more to me than how attractive it is when it's new. Or how cheap it is to buy...down the road it might cost far more than a car that's much cheaper to operate and has decent resale value. Sad to say, most any new domestic car in the same price range as a Toyota or Honda isn't worth nearly as much, or in nearly the same shape, after it's 10 years old. I remember in the past year reading about a comparison between a 1986 Accord and a 1986 Lincoln Town Car. In the beginning, the Town Car was priced 2-3 times that of the Accord. Looking at current values, the Honda is worth quite a bit more than the Town Car. That's pretty sobering, is it not? And a fairly accurate representation of reality.
Don't be surprised to see Honda and Toyota offer more RWD and AWD models in the future to stave off the exodus to BMW/Audi when the buyers are ready to upgrade.

If they offer more V6's and V8's along with that RWD/AWD I'll be banging on the door! Imagine the new Altima with RWD instead of the awful torque-steer. That was the only reason I passed on the car in June. My 1999 Alero GLS sealed GM's fate with me - never again.

See what happens when you build an awesome product? You listening big 3??? Oh, for those of you who haven't seen it already, a WRX just laid down a 10.57 quarter mile at 140 here in the US. Try that with your daily driven 4dr big 3 car with full interior and all the factory options. Granted it had quite a few aftermarket add-ons but still, nothing that couldn't be replicated easily. In fact the company that markets it is selling it as a dealer option through select dealers.

was it a privateer or was it a sponsered car like a greddy wrx or an hks wrx???
10.57, impressive, but don't forget, the Lancer isnt here yet :finger:
Theres an eclipse that ran the quarter mile in 9.8 with a 4g63 , whise is a lancer engine, if an eclipse can do it, and a lancer has more technologies such as tracktion control and what-not, then, the Lancer can go that fast too!

It was a shop. These were the guys that did it but their site has the old stats: http://www.easystreetmotorsports.com/
Keep in mind though that they were using a built engine from a company in australia that's been building subaru motors for years. You can see the car in the latest issue of Turbo too.
True the lancer isn't here yet, however from what I've heard and read I don't think I'd like the lancer. Too many electronic gizmo's for me. Have you driven a WRX? It really does like to be driven hard, I've driven in pretty much anything you can think of in my driving career so far, and I can honestly say that the driver makes all the difference with a WRX. The harder you push a WRX the faster it goes. Not to hijack this thread too far off but the lancer has it's minuses as well, when you get down to it, it's still a basic honda engine layout, so it will never be as smooth as a 'boxer' style motor. Also I swear that there must be more kinks in a lancer drivetrain due to the engine layout but I don't know for sure.

Awwww, that's nice,
Try not sounding so belligerant the next time you try to make a comment, one of these days some guy in a civic might hand you your ass! Learn to respect other people's cars. There will always be some out there faster, and "better" than you are. Making gross generalizations also make you sound like a third grader.

No, he means Gone in 60 Seconds. Just after Kyp steals the porsche from the showroom he stoplight drags a civic and that is when they get noticed by the cops (doing 80mph downtown will do that  ) which leads to the warehouse being found which kickstarts the whole plot.

My dog ain't in this fight, but I'll jump in!
The reason Honda Civics get so many flamings is the ricer-image constantly reinforced EVERY damn day while on the road. Just tonight I had some rice-punk all over my rear-end as I was going 51 in a 45 zone, with 2 lanes to pass!! I guess he wanted to "run my Camaro"! NO street-legal Civic will EVER hand me my ass! There are but a handful in the U.S. that do a 1/4-mile faster than my Camaro (all of them dedicated dragsters) yet ever Civic punk with a big pipe seems to think I want to waste my gas making them smaller in the rear-view-mirror.

A ricer is someone who "fixes up" their car with cheap parts in an effort to convince people they are not slow, and they get out of every right turn speeding to try to cinvince others and THEMSELVES that their car not slow, some people acctually think those wannabes are fast.
Ricers ruin my reputation at school, everytime a car conversation comes up, they ask me what kind of car I like, and I say, civics, integras, lancers, and they say civics are peices of shit, and when I tell them a built civic can take a mclaren f1 (11.6 quarter mile) , they think I don't know shit, even tough a built civic CAN go faster than 11.6, to this day, people at school STILL don't believe me that a 6 cylender "nissan" from japan, and that it's impossible to get 1400 hp from a 6 cylender skyline engine. I'm gonna go ricer hunting as soon as I get my integra back.
IF YOU OWN A 4 DOOR CIVIC LX WITH A TYPE R SIGN, PLEASE SLAP YOURSELF, IF YOU HAVE AN EXAUST TIP AND YOU THINK IT GIVES YOU 10 HP,PLEASE SLAP YOURSELF,IF YOU HAVE SMALL BLACK RIMS IN THE FRONT AND BIG "CUSTOM"RIMS IN THE BACK, AND YOU DON'T RACE (SPEEDING DOES'NT COUNT) ,PLEASE SLAP YOURSELF, iF YOU HAVE MORE STICKERS THAN HORSEPOWER,PLEASE SLAP YOURSELF,IF YOU THINK YOUR BOOTLEG BODY KIT MAKES YOU FASTER ON THE FREEWAY, PLEASE SLAP YOURSLEF, IF YOU HAVE A 10 INCH TALL ALLUMINUM WING AND YOUR CAR DOES'NT GO MORE THAN 110 MPH,PLEASE SLAP YOURSELF, IF ANYONE HAS CALLED YOU A RICER, PLEASE PROCEED TO SLAP YOURSELF

No, Riceburner= Japanese car, get it, Rice?
Ricer = Somebody who drives a rice burner (well, thats just common sence). When my Dad was young, he always had Holdens, so when he rented a Toyota, they called it the rice burner (that was like in the 70's) so whether the meaning has changed or not....I dunno.

A civic hand me MY arse? I severly doubt it, I would take one of those things on with my god damn lowrider bike! Its not the car its the driver really, and you dont have to react like that, is it just because you own a civic and are tired of people giving you shit because of all the rice boys you got in the US? Ok, I may hate civics, well most Hondas actually, but that doesn't mean i am ignorant. I also was not making a "gross generalizations". I will give you an example though about rice, today i went into Sydney (virtually the main city in Oz) and every Civic I saw was a heap.....Thre was a very sad boy racer one at this car show i went to and there was a early 90s 4 door sedan that had stickers all around it and it said "mugen power" on the windsheild, it had 2 baby seats in the back and it looked like it had not been washed since it was new 10 years ago. I'm just saying I dislike FWD and Civics, how can you hold it against me? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and thats mine.
