question? i have a 1995 chevy caprice classic 4.3l v6. when i put the car in reverse and give it some gas it rumbles, if i just tap the gas it won't rumble at all, i've taken it to different mechanics, some say tranny some say change filter. any suggestions, maybe this has happened to someone on this forum. i don't want to go & change the tranny if it doesn't need 2 b changed.
thanx

Welcome to AF!
Honestly it sounds like clutch wear in the transmission.
V6? You sure it's not a 4.3 V8?

yes it is a v8, it was a typing error. lol. clutch wear? i'll have it checked out. is this minor work or is it a major job? reason i'm asking is to know roughly how much job might be, don't want to overpay, my mechanic passed away so i'll be shopping around.

ahh. The clutches are inside the transmission and, along with a band, are used to hold still certain components of the planetary gearset, which is what provides the gear ranges in an automatic. The clutches themselves are of two designs - an overrun clutch which allows rotation in only one direction, or a stack clutch which stops rotation. The clutch type you are concerned with here is the stack clutch, which is not unlike a clutch for a manual transmission in operating design, but has multiple clutch plates within. These plates alternate paper-coated "frictions" that mate with the inside hub, with "steels" that mate with the outside hub, and of course a pressure plate.
There are any number of reasons for stack clutch failure - low transmission oil pressure, overloading, overheating, etc.

you know what, i'm pretty sure the reason was overloading, i had some work done on the tranny & the tranny fluid was spilling, took it back & mechanic told me it was a little overfilled to run it for a while that it would drop to its normal level, from there it was down hill. even the power of the caprice is a little off. i'll start shopping around monday for a good deal.
