creeping while parked

My 98 mountaineer wont sit still at all while parked and the parking/emergency brake is engaged it will creep a few feet in a 8 hour period . I placed a tape measure next to it ,marked a spot on the tire with white paint and went to bed the next morning the vehicle had creeped 4 feet .there is only a slight incline in the driveway less than an inch over 10 feet area mechanic says tranny parking gear is shot dealership said parking brake needs replacment and adjustment. please help before my mountaineer rolls away forever.( V8 Engine,AWD,Auto trans)

All you have to do is check the parking brake. Apply the parking brake and put it in gear. Have your foot ready on the regular brake and give it slight gas. Does the parking brake hold?

Even if the P.brake is shot, an Auto trans should not creep at all! Maybe both mechanics are right :naughty:

I Replaced the parking brake all new cables and all new parts from front to rear it was adjusted and replaced by a dealer. It holds on a hill while in nuetral but not when in gear or while parked . all brakes replaced same day

It holds when the transmission is in neutral, but not when in Park? What happens if you release the parking brake while in neutral, does it roll pretty freely?

If it truly is in neutral and the parking brake holds, there is no reason that the parking brake wouldn't hold when in park since there would be at least as much resistance in the drivetrain as when in neutral.

A Mountaineer will creep if you have removed the front drive shaft or you have a problem with the front differential.

If you've got an AWD Mountaineer with the front driveshaft removed, you'll have difficulty getting it to move. The center viscous coupling unit will attempt to transfer all power to the front, right?

-Rod no but you will burn the fluid in the t-case and eventualy the coupler by driving without the front d-shaft. if the mounty rolls in park without the parking brake on I WOULD HAVE YOUR T-CASE CHECKED OUT when the coupling goes out it will slip and allow the vehicle to roll could be dangerous or expensive if you roll into another car matt
