have an 89 trooper, 2.6, 5spd, and am having trouble getting it to idle correctly. any way i can check the throttle positioning sensor? was told it might also be the maf sensor too. is this possible? i'm also running a cone style k&n air filter that is in need of cleaning also. any ideas would be helpful.

also, engine is a 91, i just replaced the head gasket about 250 miles ago. i replaced the egr about 2 years ago and the idling problem was there beforee i did the head gasket.

I had an '88 5 years ago that had an idle that was often going up and down. Several mechanics had different opinions... one changed the TPS, and another put in a used throttle and it still happened. Then I took it to a guy who realized the linkage had a problem and he fixed it by bending part of it with pliers and I drove it fine for 3 more years. He said the linkage on both the throttles I had in there were having problems releasing the cable when the gas pedal was released and the computer was misreading this- which resulted in the idle going up and down by itself.
